Back in the late 90's, I was working on a movie that had a product placement deal with Red Bull.

A 14 hour shooting day was considered pretty short.

Pretty much all we had to drink was an endless supply of Red Bull.

On days off / early finishes, we'd go on a bar crawl, and drink Red Bull & Vodka (Red Bull had just been released, and everyone thought it was the greatest mixer ever).

After about 3 months of this, I was on the camera truck, and took a sip from a can - almost immediately I thought my kidneys, and heart were about to explode.

I've never touched that stuff since, and the comedown was about 10 days of being able to see through walls, and hearing molecules colliding.

My coworkers suck that stuff down like it's going out of style. Myself, I tried one sip of it and can't stand the taste.

Coffee?? I used to drink it morning, noon and night. Now I can't drink more than half a cup before it becomes an instant laxative.

I drink way too many Monsters, 1 or 2 a day.
Plenty of people have bad habits. I just had one today, it's not too often that I have one, usually I get up and grind my own coffee and make that. Either way I don't so much think it's the caffeine that's horrible in energy drinks than it is a lot of the other stuff - though in large quantities and as a mixer with alcohol caffeine won't do you any favours either. I dunno, it broke up the monotony of the same coffee the same way every day while I got through a big test, and it's higher octane than your average pop.

I wouldn't recommend its habitual use I suppose, especially if you were on a desert island and had the choice between daily shipments of water or red bull exclusively. But like, if you're otherwise healthy and keeping fit the odd one won't kill you.

I do use them when im tired and have to think at work so i dont screw up. I know they are not good for you but neither is getting in trouble at work. I do notice the younger crowed drinks alot of theese. I was behind a kid at the store one day and he had the biggiest can of monster i have ever see. It had to be close to a litre. He is with this girl and tells her he drinks 3or4 of theese a day.

When I was in college I had a full course load, a part time job, a rock band, and a girlfriend. I was drinking a 2 liter bottle of "Jolt" cola every day plus supplemental cans of mountain dew.

I was typically sleeping 3 - 4 hours per night and was keeping that up for weeks at a time. About once or twice a month, I'd sleep for about 12 hours and tell myself that it was making up for all those other lost hours.

I kept that up for more than 2 years until I started to fall apart physically and mentally. My new wife convinced me to cut back to a single can of soda per day and my health returned to normal a few weeks after that.

Maintained that 1 can a day habit until 2013 when I was in the ICU for 10 days. They refused to let me have anything by mouth, not even water. When they finally allowed me to have a few ice chips to chew on, I thought water was the best tasting thing ever. Eventually, I could eat and drink a normal diet but I discovered that I no longer liked the taste of soda or any other drink except water.

So, with a few rare exceptions, water is all that I drink now.

I would guess that it's been at least 10 years since my last energy drink; when I was a teenager. I never drank them regularly. Just when I felt like I needed to stay up.

I do, however, drink one or two small cups of coffee on most days. That's mostly because I'm a fan of good home-ground soft brew coffee.

I'm always stunned by how much refrigerator space is allotted to energy drinks at most gas station convenience stores. I've drunk energy drinks in the past on very rare occasions but I haven't had one in years. They don't do anything for me energy-wise and they never sounded like a very healthy option to me. The success of these drinks is baffling to me but I guess I really shouldn't be surprised anymore by what people are willing to consume.

As for soft drinks: I used to enjoy them as a kid but they're just too sweet for my palette these days (I say that as someone with quite a sweet tooth). It would be a struggle for me to drink an entire can of, say, Coke or 7-Up. They just taste like sugary syrup to me (which I guess is essentially what such drinks are).

The marketing budget for the energy drink companies must be insane. Getting that much up front placement and shelf space in stores isn't cheap. But yeah, I remember when Red Bull was the only game in town circa early 2000s. I couldn't even buy it where I lived for a long time - my parents used to bring me a few cans when they visited from TX. Now it's as easy (and plentiful) to buy as soda. And there are a million brands and varieties.

The market spoke loudly with demand, it seems.

I drink a couple of cups of coffee in the mornings, have an occasional soda or energy drink. I should probably drink more water but it is what it is.

Over the last week life has changed quite a bit for us midwestern folk, with a hurricane style storm with 120+ mph winds that destroyed the city I live in. We are on day 5 without power, but have running water. Power lines down, roads blocked by fallen trees, houses buildings destroyed in the same manner. Just not a good week having a worldwide pandemic stacked with a natural disaster.

I don't have a grill or generator, so warming water is a struggle. Anything that needed refrigeration has spoiled and been thrown away.

Obviously I haven't had coffee soda or energy drinks. While I had a headache for a few days, I think I've kicked my caffeine habit. So in the worst of storms, there is good to be found.

I spent many years as a grunt in the army, so going without creature comforts wont kill me. I know how to survive on little to nothing, so I'm good. At this point I'm not even wanting coffee, which is something I never thought I would ever say.

I think those are 710 or 750ml, something like 22-26 ounces in US measurements. I think I've had one or two before, but three or four of those in a day...

Either way, been thinking about quitting caffeine and dropping out of social media to focus on reading, career, and playing instruments.

My biggest problem is that I know it affects my ulcerative colitis. I've actually quit a few times but I'll hit an especially rough morning and whoops, goodbye wagon lol.

Tha "energy" craze. I think it was Mars bar that started printing "energy bar" on their wrappers :meh:. I guess it says something about the food so many people are eating when they need all of these energy boosts from Red Bull and the like. That just reminded me of Red Bull Music Academy. Remember that?

Hang in there, man! We've been there in Eastern NC. Hurricanes every year and a "hundred year flood" every (oddly enough) ten years. Here's hoping for some blue skies out that way (and some power!) soon!

Thanks brother! I used to live in Miami, so this was something I've experienced before, only thing is it wasn't expected or planned for. Thank goodness no storm surge. We have tornados here, just wouldn't have guessed this was brewing.

So now we get to add hurricanes to our list of tornados and blizzards. Lol

I happened to do another count yesterday. I left my home at about 6:00 a.m. local, and got home around 5:00 p.m. local. In that time, I counted 54 energy drinks that were opened and being consumed (in other words, not on store shelves or in fridges at work).

I was in three medical facilities for work. The vast majority of people consuming energy drinks were medical professionals.

What the crap.....:wideyed:

Maybe it's easier than coffee? With coffee, you need a vessel to drink it out of that will keep it warm, plus stuff to add to it if you so desire (which most seem to do). With energy drinks, they're grab and go. Pop the top and you're getting caffeine in your system immediately.

I'm of the opinion that most people that drink coffee don't like it. If they did, they wouldn't be turning it into a dessert drink.

I drink the sugar free water (not carbonated water) based orange Rockstars. I do one a day. I love black coffee, but I don't like drinking more than 1 cup. 1 cup and I'm done. I have zero interest in quitting. I've quit caffeine a few times, but as a lifelong chronic insomniac, it's pointless. At some point after a couple of days of no sleep, I have to be functional.
