I just purchased an Epiphone Explorer online and so far I like the sound of it. Not too bad for passive pickups.
Though I think installing active pickups on it I think would be a great idea to improve the tone. I have installed a pair of Emg P pickups on one of my basses and it sounded perfect and right now I am considering installing one on my Explorer.
I have never taken the Explorer apart so I am curious if the pickup that is showing right now are just covers, that there's the real pickups underneath it.
What is exactly the type of pickup used on this bass? Is it the ordinary 4 string type pickup like this?:
