Epiphone "P-Bass"

Well, I've got one. (If I were just a little more computer-savvy, I'd figure out how to post a pic. Have to get my 15 y/o guitar player son to teach me....) My wife gifted it to me as part of a "starter pack" from Epiphone about 5 years ago, when I mentioned I was thinking about starting to play again, after being out of the biz for a few decades.(!) She had NO idea about anything bass, and didn't consult me because it was a Bday present.

The "pack" contained, IIRC, the bass, a tiny amp, cable, and gig bag. I figure it couldn't have cost much more than $200USD, if that. I pretty quickly went out and got a bit bigger amp. =8-)

The bass itself is a serviceable piece. I put some medium gauge D'Addario XL Chromes (flatwounds) on it, had it set up properly and have it tweaked when necessary, which seems to be about once yearly for the amount I play it/atmospheric changes in New England, and it plays quite nicely, thank you. The pups are stock, and the pots are too, so its a little - but not much! - noisy with some ground hum if I take my hands off it, but, hey, it works. Some day I might get around to replacing them with better units (any suggestions, TBers?), but for now, money's a little tight.

Also, its not light weight, but not as heavy as some other basses I've tried. Balance is fair, and the neck works for my hands/fingers, which are not terribly big. With these strings, it holds a tune well, and the neck is proving to be fairly stable.

You can probably guess I like it. Granted, it has some sentimental value, but it DOES play nicely. My other bass, which I got a year ago, is an Ibanez SR505, which I also like just fine. Its a completely different animal (Elixer roundwounds) with active electronics, and I'd say I split 50/50 playing with them in the band I'm in. I use the Ep for older rock/jazzy type stuff, and the Ibanez for our more modern stuff/newer originals; that said, sometimes I mix 'em up, just for fun.

Enjoy!
