EQ/OD Recommendation

Just a 2 band EQ but an Xotic Bass BB ticks all the other boxes. And it's 2 band EQ is excellent. Why they discontinued them is beyond me, plenty of pros use them.

I think these are a bit hard to come by, but I'll keep an eye out. I really liked the Xotic Ross compressor I had for a while.

Yeah, too bad they don't make 'em anymore. Now they just offer the RC v2 for bass (I have the v1 also) but there's not any real dirt on tap there. The BB can go from very clean to ampy to fuzz.

Never even heard of this and it looks awesome. The tube in the pedal is a huge plus since I only have a solid state combo amp (GK MB-112).

You can't go wrong with any selection of the Sushi..
Check out the Underground Accelerator as well..
I have only a Hand wired Space Heater, for now, and it's amazing

Laney Digbeth Pre - very useable 4 band EQ with switchable frequency for the low mids plus tilt control, and a great tubey overdrive sound.

Darkglass vintage microtubes is really nice, not too “metally.” It works a lot of old school rock sounds. You could get one of the more complex versions with EQ. Also Tech21 YYZ, which is more airy sounding, and not just for Geddy sound, has nice EQ options. These are the best OD I’ve found, not too harsh, fuzzy or farty, good bit of clean bass end on tap plus OD for the top end.

Boss GEB-7 Bass Equalizer seems like could be good in addition.

I know you said you tried the darkglass B3k and it was too metal for you.
Try the B7k or vintage microtubes with the 4 band EQ. Super versatile from light dirt to heavy distortion. Much more flexibility than the b3k.
Never bonded with the MXR m81. The clean sounded good. The OD was kinda meh.
Long time Sansamp user. The behringer is close. But the original and RBI blow it away.

Get the Sushi Underground Accelerator. Now you only have to decide whether it'll be your preamp or your dirt pedal.

Throwing out a recommendation for the Darkglass Alpha Omega or AO Ultra as they sound completely different to the B3K and IMO is much more versatile. Would give you everything you’re looking for in a single box.

Spaceman Apollo VII does a nice job on bass. But if you’re also after a very flexible EQ check out the Wampler Pantheon. It’s a bluesbreaker style OD that is very tweakable and Baxandall EQ so it works well on bass. And they can be had for pretty low cost. It has a fairly low noise floor too.

Sènor Sushi is currently reworking it (likely removing the Record Out which was causing a bit of a noise problem), but I think the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] might suit you quite well, but it's $300. Gives you both a clean and dirty channel to work with. It should be available for an August build soon.

How would the EQ be for the clean boost? I saw another demo where the EQ didn't seem to effect the sound that much, but the demo was not very good sound quality.

Do the Sushi pedal differ in tone across them, or is it mostly features that sets them apart? There's a Dr. Wattson ($185), Smoke Signal ($275) and JC Emerald ($175) on Reverb right now, but the two channels is very appealing.

So right now the decision seems to be between a

Dr. Scientist The Elements - extreme versatility is a plus and a minus at the same time for me, not sure I would use it to it's full effect, probably not, but there would also probably be times I would use it outside of my comfort zone for inspiration.

Carl Martin Bass Drive - I love the idea of putting a tube in my signal chain and one of the demos I found sounds really great. Are there any owners of this pedal that could comment on it?

Sushi Box - still trying to figure these out, but they are extremely appealing for what I'm looking for.

Yes there is significant variance as each is based on different amplifier preamp sections that each have unique characteristics. The Emerald is based on the Marshall JCM800, Dr Wattson on the Hiwatt DR103 and the[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]there are two variations. Each of which do different things because of differnces in the gain structure as well as the tone stack. IMHO the Smoke Signal is fantastic in either version as you will have both a clean channel and a powerful distortion channel, I love mine.

You could order a Slampegg Bee or other preamp pedal, like the Underground Accelerator (Fender tone stack) for August now. If it doesn't meet your needs, you wouldn't have much trouble reselling it when the Smoke Signal becomes available again.
