Double Bass Ergo Megathread part I

There are some sets that are available with low 'B's, and some with High C's. Jesse recommended to me that instead of using a BEADG set, use an EADGC (High C) set and tune them down to BEADG. That's how I have mine strung.
Some people also recommend using a Solo set as opposed to an Orchestra set and tuning those down as well.
My favorite retailers are Link Removed and Quinn Violins.

For my 7 string Jesse put on a good Low B, so I use my old spiros for the standard 4, a spiro C and a super sensitive High F.
I played last night in an avant garde jazz big band, it blended fine with the other bass and strings and was a lot of fun to play as always.
And wow, what a bass. This thing is beautiful. And the sound is amazing. I'm glad I didn't get a palentino or stagg, I can't imagine a better EUB tone, it's really perfect sounding.
This my first Upright, so I can't really comment too much intonation, I'm learning, but the sounds I can get out of it when I play it right are just booming.
I play it straight into my interface, apogee duet, and out my studio monitors (with sub). I did notice that playing it thought my Bassman 100 silver face really did not sound very good at all. That amp works great for crunchy rock bass guitar, but just sounds hollow and weird with the ergo. I think I'll probably sell it since thing is my main bass now.
I'm looking for suggestions on a new rig. Perhaps maybe just a tone hammer as a DI box so I could just go straight into the PA. Or should I get an actual amp? It would need to be clean because this bass loves clean.

Im not sure about amps, im sure any rig thats good for upright or anything acoustic will get you a good solid tone...BUT...as is customary here on TB, i must say...no pics, no bass 
Here it is. I've been playing it non stop for the past week. It's awesome, and I love it, however there are two problems I'm having with it, one major one minor, which I'll explain at the bottom.

The minor problem is that when I apply verbrato, the whole thing shakes quite a bit on the mount, so I kind of wish it was mounted better, but perhaps I just need to be more gentle.
THe BIG problem I'm having is that the finish is coming off like there's no tomorrow. Just about any spot that I push my finger on for a few seconds is a tiny bit tacky feeling. The spots where i rest my thumbs in the first position, and the plucking spot near the bridge are ALL GUNKY, black nasty sticky ****. It's really annoying, and getting worse by the day, I'm not sure how to fix this.
I've heard of this happening with satin finish before, but I'm not sure how to fix it, it really sucks, if anyone have any advise please let me know. I hear you can take 0000 steel wool to it, but I'm not sure of the technique needed. I'd be essentially removing the finish if I did that right?

Yeah I've been e-mailing him for a few days now. He doesn't check his e-mails everyday so I'll have to wait for a response. Total bummer, because minus the finish problem this is my favorite bass ever. SOunds better and is more fun to play then any bass guitar I've ever had.
That was EXACTLY my experience with the bass! It isn't just my go-to bass anymore. It is my ONLY bass now and has been for the better part of a year.

You know, that has also been my experience. My favorite tone on the Ergo so far has been running through a preamp (only to boost the signal) and then into the powered monitors.
Makes me wonder if that isn't just the way I want to go with this regarding a rig. A preamp not unlike the ART TubePre or something like it and then just a power amp and cab.
With a simple turn of the wrist the Ergo, for me can go from upright flavor to fretless bass guitar.
I've been reading a lot on the net, and people seem to say this is a common problem with nitro finish, that it takes years to truly dry. I've read that a combo of 0000 steel wool, and the right polish can fix up the problem as it occurs. I think I'm going to try this. If you talk to Jesse just ask him if this is the right thing to do and tell him soundwavelove sent him some emails about it. He has my email from when I ordered it.
Although I think it's interesting that no one else has had a gunky finish problem, perhaps I sweat too much.
As far as preamps, I'm already selling my old bass rig on craigslist, and I'm looking at PA's and preamps. It sounds great with my Apogee Duet as a preamp, though my computer, but I'd rather have an analog pre. I'm thinking either the Aguilar Tone Hammer, (I love the aguilar sound) or a maybe even a Xone VF-1, which is pricier, but more versatile, I'd be able to use it with all my other equipment (synths, guitars, vocals)

I didn't really like the finish either, and have sanded the back of the neck down to bare wood, smoothed it out with grade 0000 steel wool and treated it with linseed oil. Plays wonderfully now.
