I've totally drawn out the pre-amp schematic

I've drawn the switching diagram

I still have no idea what the original EB pickup schematic is.

I guess I will just have to wire up the switch myself.

As far as I can tell there are a lot of grounds and junctions being switched to make the 3 coil pu work.

The "Wiring Diagram" on Music Mans site is a joke. I'm trying to use it as a reference but as far as I can tell the switch in this bass is opposite.

Where on their diagram the switch toward the neck should yield a series connection, I get Red and Black connected (If indeed they are the hots).

The thing that really confuses me about the schematic is that white and green are tied to the non inverting inputs of the op amps (where one would expect ground), and in some positions that sends Black and red to the Non inverting inputs. of Op amp channels 1 and 4 in certain positions. Which should cause 100% cancellation of the pickup in that position.

Lets see

Blk goes to inverting input on OP 1 unity gain then goes to inverting input on OP 4 Unity gain.

When Red and Black are tied Gn PUP wire goes to non inverting input OP 1, and Wht wire goes to non-inverting input OP 4

One would expect the non-inverting inputs to be tied to ground.

In the Switch White PUP wire gets tied to Black, and fed to non-inverting and inverting as a result (that should be phantom coil mode)

I guess their trying to use the Op amps as part of the noise canceling?

This is a weird circuit.
 
If that's the bass with the dummy coil, then yes it's wired into the preamp as part of the noise cancelation setup when using the pickup in single coil mode. This is so the dummy coil doesn't load down the pickup.

Your friend should have gotten the three coil Bart, then it would have wired in directly.

Obviously you don't need or want the dummy coil circuit, since that will only add noise to the system.

So you are going to have to figure out how to rewire the switch for something useful and remove the dummy coil circuit.

I guess I will have to tie the non-inverting inputs on the #1 & 4 Op am channels to ground.

The input impedance of the Op amp seems a bit low its ~33.2k ohms

Perhaps I should just ditch one of the buffer stages, and run one non inverting since I don't need the semi Differential configuration.

Very interesting circuit though, I wish I knew how that coil was wired I guess I'll have to get it from the owner.

Well if anyone wants a hand drawing of the actual pre-amp schematic I guess I can scan it. Its pretty straight forward, but a little odd as far as the pickup switching.

I'm a little confused at why they put the different load resistors at the output switching, I guess its somehow supposed to make up for the level difference? Or perhaps loading on the coupling Cap?? It would change the High pass I suppose?

The reason for the different resistors, is that the output of the pickup in series is much higher.
I really think you should sell the quad coil on ebay (you should get a decent price) and buy a tri coil. it's going make things so much easier.
You might even find someone on this site who wants to do a direct swap.

I might consider that if it was mine.

The owner, thinks the Music Man tone is a little more aggressive than he wanted, but he loves the feel of the Music man bass and neck. So the idea was to see if he could start with a tone that he could finesse a little more.

I guess the magnet is broken on the original PU as well.

Anyhow modifying the pre amp isn't going to be to much of a chore for me since I drew the entire schematic out.

I'm going to wire the bass 1-1&2-2

You wouldn't happen to know how much less one gets typically in parallel than single?

Hi, does this preamp work? I have a sterling5 SUB with a regular humbucker and 2-band pre but changing the PUP to a lundgren 2 coil (4-wire) H and I'd like to add a 3 band pre and 3-way blade import switch, can someone give me some suggestions on this circuit. thanks
 
Hey thanks ex-tension. I did see that one as well but this one seemed more appropriate to me because of the 4-wire and blade switch, the other DIY only has a blend pot, I'd like to try 1/1+2/2 setup, not sure how the other one would work out for me. but in terms of preamp, this one has 2 more OP amps I'm just confused between the two.

The schematic in this topic doesn't look easy to read/decipher.
If you want to use a blade switch for the pickup this configuration is easier to use:

thanks, seems like position 1 = north(single), position 3 is south (single) and position 2 is the parallel with the jumpers on different poles. I have an import 3-way blade switch but simple enough to match. Another question on the 3-EQ DIY preamp, the 1/4" jack is it a stereo or is it an open 3 tab mono jack? thanks for your help

edit: on the 3-way, the HOT starts on A1, I'll draw it out to get a better understanding of it.

StingRay5 (and single pickup Sterlings) are series/single/parallel.

You can use whatever jack you want. To be able to switch the battery on/off you need a 'TRS' jack, some people call it stereo.
