Double Bass EUB closest sound to an upright??

Hello TBers,

I'm an electric bass player considering jumping into the EUB arena. I was watching a video of Chris Doky playing his Yamaha SLB 200 LTD and I was amazed at how "real" it sounded. I didn't realize how far this technology has come.

As a total newbie to this field can you tell me is this the best product for simulating a string bass sound or are there others that do it better? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome aboard.
There's no magical answer to this question.
In fact, the tone comes a lot from the hand and technique of the player.
Even on a fine acoustic DB, you'd probably not sound very uprightish, with all due respect.
Without proper technique, you won't sound like an upright.
A pro will sound like himself on almost anything.

That said, I invite you to browse the forum a bit.
You'll find several similar threads and lots of different opinions.

I heard a pro jazz player on a custom built stick some years ago. Nairobi Trio. He's gone back to a DB lately.

His stick sounded entirely real to my ears and probably worth 5 or ten times what my car is worth. Horses for courses.

I'm digging my Stagg but I'm sure you can do better out of the box with virtually anything else!

Your technique and style of playing does matter, but you also need an instrument that does the job. Eg. my NS Design CR5M does sound great but not like an acoustic one at all. (While there are upright bass strings on it.) So keep away from these.

I use a zeta, gave recorded with it and done live shows, closest thing to an upright sound I have found
