Double Bass EUB's & Guts Strings

The Eminence EUB responds really well with gut or gut-like strings. I've had both Labella Goldentones and currently Velvet Garbos on it and it sounds really natural. I jacked up the action when I first bought it and it sounds like new instrument.

I have an old Ampeg Baby Bass that had guts on it when I bought it. The sound was really good--better to me than steel. I took them off only to have the bass set up for salsa.

I have an Azola wood bridge made to replace the original with a Bass Max that sounded great with the gut as well.

Mixing the original pickup with the modern pickup and gut strings through an SVT was outstanding fun.

You can use them on anything with piezo pickups. Since gut isn't metal, it won't work with magnetics.

That's right - you can use any kind of string on an NS EUB and it will be picked up by the piezos - my NS CR5 only has piezos and no magnetic pickups - although it seems a strange thing to want to do - as usually the only reason for using gut is the sound and you aren't going to get a proper DB sound with any EUB really....?

I would see it as an expensive and difficult option with little or no reward ...?

I used to employ variously a gut G and D (with wound A and E) or a gut C and G (with wound D and A) on my Van Zalinge Z bass. Lovely warm sound (piezoelectric pick up/Polytone Minibrute), easy on the fingers, harsher sound with arco.
