Hi, so, being tired on a Sunday and bidding on ebay is often not a good idea, buttt.... I think I got a good deal today with this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0359251840
It doesn't come with a PSU/case etc but it seems like a good deal considering how expensive they are, and how good they are.
I'm a bit worried, however, by the fact that I have little to no idea what I'm doing with electronics, and that I might not even be able to source a PSU (which is possibly why it was up for sale with a starting price of £20 in the first place).

Does anyone have any advice? Is this going to be too difficult? and if so, does anyone who does know about these things want to buy it?
I could do with a project to be honest, I've got nothing on until October so will happily spend my days on this.

The cryptic link ain't helping You in your quest for knowledge.

While I have no experience with EA products, I do have quite a bit experience with MI equipment with separate PSU's.

If the PSU is missing = worry. If the PSU can't be purchased separately = run.

I'd copy and pasted from another forum and it'd abbreviated it...

There is an option on the heads to purchase a different power supply, but in all photos of the head elsewhere on the internet there appears to be a normal 3 pin/'kettle lead' input, suggesting an internal PSU.
These must surely be available for repairs and such, (I would imagine that they blow up occasionally) I'm just wondering where from...

Hi Doug.

From the pics it looks like the power supply is on the power amp PCB, so in theory, all You're missing is the case and the transformer.

Someone DIY oriented here with the same amp should be able to measure the transformer voltages for You. If it's not "too out there", a substitute shouldn't be too hard to find.

It might be a good idea to include a pic of the PCB's on this thread, either one of the ones on the listing, or a more descriptive one when You can take some better ones yourself.

Just bumping this and looking for any owners of an iamp 500 that can tell me anything at all about the power supply, I'm still waiting for the company to get back to me, and noone else seems to know anything about what transformer/psu I'd need including the man I go to to repair my amp usually.
A picture of the inside of the amp would be amazing if you do have one, I really don't want to have to stick it back on ebay and admit defeat!

How come?

To me it's pretty straight forward and easy, assuming of course that the parts that are on the pic work like they should.

I've bought much, much worse. Some of those have been successes, some total failures.

As-is el-equipment have their appeal, but it's really a roll of dice.
You just have to take someone elses word for the stuff being ok.

I've emailed the ebay seller to ask what happened to the original power supply, which seems like an obvious question but hadn't occured to me until today.
To be honest, the man who repairs my whole band's amps looked at it today with disgust saying "this is not an $800 amp", and "there's no way this is 350/500w", so I think his skills might not cover it...

I'll try giving EA a call tomorrow if they haven't emailed me back, and if not, I'll stick it on ebay again and hopefully get back what I paid.
Anyone want it for £100??

He just probably didn't realize that it's a class D design. Those look really weird and tiny to a class A/B techs.

Just wait a little longer, I'd still say that there's a good chance that You'll be able to determine whether the amp works or not.

If it does work, You'll have yourself an amp that you obviously appreciate. If it doesn't work, the seller lied to you and you can take it from there.

I could take that off Your hands for that price, but let's just be patient. It was Your catch anyway ;).

Thanks Sam, you've been a lot of help.
EA have actually got back to me now, just waiting on a price for the transformer, so fingers are *definitely* crossed that it's not going to run to too large an amount.
Yeah, there was a lot of "that mate, no chance that pushed 500w"
"no, really it does, it says so on the circuit board"
"oh".

Perhaps just old fashioned, he's only done A/B heads for me in the past.

I'll keep you updated.

Hi.

You're welcome, happy to be of assistance.

The Hypex spec'ed toroid transformer for 500W class D amp is 120€ over here (42V-0-42V ; 12V-0-12V ; 12V-0), so Yours may be in the same ballpark. If it's much more, I'd check if the Hypex transformer could be used.

The pre seems to take a single sided power (assuming the white connector is the power connector) and good chances are that it's 12V. Edit:Too quick a glance, there's three pins so either double sided or 2 different voltages. Shouldn't be a problem though.

If You decide to let the amp go (which I won't suggest, at least too quickly), PM me, I'll buy it.
