european power in the us?

hi folks, i'm considering a used mixer that was originally sold in the german market (220 volts). i'm "assuming" all that's needed is a step down transformer and it'll work normally on us 110. does anyone have knowledge/experience w/this? am i wrong? should i forget my money saving scheme?

Technically, it would be a step-up transformer as you need to take the 110 from the wall and make it 220.

Find the watt rating of the device, and exceed it for the transformer. I'd guess that something like this would work:

Yep, a step-up transformer.

Twice the draw is usually a good starting point when sizing it, but it doesn't hurt (except Your back ) to have extra.

Must be something fancy that You want to use, what is the mixer if you don't mind me asking?


One thing I'd like to add is that when using a step up/down transformer with MI or PA equipment, do make sure that the grounding is very good and to one point.
Otherwise You may end up with potential differences between various conductive items .

starting to sound more complicated then the $25 transformers i saw online. nothing fancy, just a really good price on an mg166cx. i did see on their specs they list lots of different power sources... does that mean i just need a USA transformer and it'll work properly?

The MG 166 uses an AC adaptor. You can get one for the US from your local GC and use it. Likely cost you less than a transformer and without the liability. Part number from Yamaha is a PA-30

This is the correct solution. And more efficient to boot.

Check with the manufacturer tech department---- you might be able to "re-tap" the primary of the transformer that is in the unit.
You would also need to change the line fuse(s) or circuit breaker in the unit. OR the manufacturer might sell you the correct transformer for the 115v version of your mixer.
