I play bluegrass. My Upton Hawkes is not loud. I just removed Obligatos which started losing volume after six months. The Evah weich's are very mellow and don't didn't seem to have any more volume than the six month Oblig's. I had to pull real hard for volume and the result was a slower return for the next note. Need to get rid of these strings. Bought last week from Quinn Violins.

Double Bass Evah's weich's 1 week old - can't use

I too play bluegrass only. I tried the EP med. They have a good tone and balance but lack the volume I was looking for. I have used several different strings on my 76' ES-1 thru the years and have now come back to Spirocores like a lot of others that I have known and read about. The Spiros have plenty of volume and good tone to satisfy all the good bluegrass players I know. Even Robin Smith, bass player for Ronnie Reno, told me he went back to Spirocores.
The only other strings I liked almost as well, was Velvet Garbos. The only problem I have with them is being afraid they would break. I have a couple of bass playing friends that have had bad luck with them breaking. I did not have any to break for the 6 mos. I played them but was not wanting to risk having that happen when I had a gig coming up.
Give Spiros a try if you have not done so. Also make sure you setup is the best it can be. A good luthier is the key to that.

I'm curious if something changed in your set up like a soundpost getting knocked out of place. Spiros might be a bit bright for bluegrass, at least for the first few months. They're great strings but they'll need a lot of breaking in. When was the last time you had your bass looked at by a luthier? You may just need a little tweak to get some of that volume back.
I just switched from Spiros to Evahs to Spiro Weichs to Evah Weichs with very little variance in volume.
Love my La Bella black tape wounds for bluegrass and they lasted 2 years and 3 months. for me using them every day. Easy on the fingers too.
