I understand the towel but why do you open the windows? Doesn't that dry things out again? Hey, whatever works for you. If you have a hygrometer (reasonably accurate digital ones can be had for about $10), and you're able to keep the humidity where you want it, then it really doesn't matter too much how you get there.
Just a side note on cheap hygrometers: I bought some really cheap mechanical hygrometers (garanteed max 7% difference!) thinking that if was buying 2 of them, I couldn't go wrong. After a couple of days I realized that both hygro were inconsistently showing a 15%-25% difference (between the 2). If you do the math, you'll realize that using just one of those could be greatly misleading. I ended up buying more expensive hygrometers as I felt I couldn't trust the cheap ones. So for those who are looking to buy an hygrometer, I'd suggest to invest in a nice digital device first (Mines were about 30$).
I've never been happy with the cheap mechanical ones. I've done quite well with the $10 digital ones. I've compared across and found them to be typically within 2-3% of each other.
