Ever been trapped under Bench Press without spotter?

When I was in high school, a friend told me the way to bench press without a spotter was to not screw the spin collars onto the ends of the bar to secure the weights. If you get pinned, you just tip the bar either right or left and the weights on that side fall off onto the floor, then the bar pops back up in the air and the weights on the other side fall off the bar onto the floor. I've never done it, though.

I've heard this advice. I've seen what happens when you try this. Don't do this.

The guy who tried this trick often lifted without a spotter. One time he got stuck and so dropped his left arm to let the plate fall off. Only one plate fell off and the whole barbell then shifted back to the right side putting a lot of pressure on his neck. Until all the plates fell off the right side and the barbell immediately zinged over to the left and hit the floor hard.

He got up looking totally white and shaking pretty hard. :smug:

there has to be someone else at the gym. lifting heavy without a spot is silly. if its light like in the low 200's and you must lift without a spotter and you get stuck just rest it on your chest and support as much weight as you can, and roll it down towards your hips and stand up...dumping the weight can get you or someone hurt...honestly though benching heavy without a spot is just asking for it...people have died from getting pinned on their neck. I have been lifting for a long time and never been pinned, just know your limits.
