Ever Done Something..

I once did an impression of Chris Rock that was so perfect it literally left everyone around me with their mouth hanging wide open before breaking out in laughter. I'd never tried it before or since.

There was also the time I ran an entire beer pong table. At the start of the game I hit my first cup, next turn hit another so I was "heating up," then third turn hit another so I was "on fire" after which I cleared the rest of the other teams cups. It was glorious.

I improvised an extended solo on bass when the lead guitarist suddenly went silent about two measures before the guitar solo in We're An American Band.

When I saw it later (someone just happened to catch it on their cell phone), I (and the band) could hardly believe I pulled it off so well. It was the first bass solo I ever attempted on stage in 35 years.

I'm good for another 35 years.

Sixteen years ago (I was 33) I decided on a whim to go for a swim in Lake Superior the 3 miles from Madeline Island to the mainland.

I knew I was a good recreational swimmer but I'd never tried any distance swimming even in a pool much less a huga and volatile lake like that.

I recruited my brother to accompany me in a rowboat in case I got into any difficulty. The 1st mile went okay until I got out into the main channel and had a headwind with 3 to 4 foot waves hitting me in the face.

It took me close to 2 hours to reach land and my muscles were so fatigued I probably wouldn't have been able to go another mile if I had to.

Lot's of things could have gone wrong but didn't. This was a high traffic area with boats of all sizes, from small power boats to all kinds of sailboats and yachts to commercial fishing boats and freighters. I managed to not get run over and kept water out of my lungs when big waves hit.

Trying to ever repeat the trip seemed to me like daring mother nature to do its worst. Now, almost 50 years old, and not in any shape to swim for any distance, it would be suicide to try anything like that again.

When I was in my way home from China I wasn't allowed on my flight due to complications that couldn't be communicated through as language barrier. I ended up having to get a flight the next day, with an overnight standing room only train ticket to Beijing because the flight there was full, the cabby tried to shaft me for eighty bucks, threatening to keep my luggage, and I got held up at customs because I forgot that you couldn't have full sized tubes of toothpaste in the cabin of the plane, but by the end of the ideal I got home the day before Valentine's day, and I barely slept or ate for almost 72 hours.

It wasn't particularly artful or skilled, especially the luggage ordeal, but I'm proud of the sheer amount of stamina with which I somehow pulled through.

I've never been a very athletic person. In high school, we had this flag football game, and before we started someone threw a very long, overthrown pass. I ran off across the field, made a great leaping dive for it, and miraculously came up with the ball. Everybody decided I was the secret weapon of the day and wanted me on their team.

Boy were they disappointed...

Ever done something that was really really good and you don't know how you ever pulled it off because you're convinced there's no way you could ever do that again..?

Yes.

I pulled off a next to impossible pool shot in a bar full of people watching the game, winning $50 in the process. I'm an average pool player at best and that shot was complete BS, but I called it and I sunk it! And there were a hundred witnesses! It was like the movies!

Never been able to repeat it.
