First post here. I've been playing the bass for 8 years. Though I'm not enthusiastic or talented enough to be thinking about conservatory or a performance program, I do plan to play in the orchestra of whatever college or university I end up attending.
So, I plan to record a few excerpts and mail in a tape with the arts supplement of the Common App. For what it's worth, I'm applying to several Ivy League schools, a couple of small New England liberal arts colleges, UChicago, and Michigan.
What I need to figure out is how many excerpts to send, and which excerpts those should be. I'll almost definitely be playing the theme from the first movement of Mozart 40, as well as the recitative from Beethoven 9. Assuming I need to record more than just those two, my friends have recommended Mozart 35, Mahler 1, the Kije Suite, Beethoven 7, and Bach Orchestral Suite 2. Should at least one of my excerpts be an orchestral solo? And for schools I mentioned, is there any need to be reaching to play impressive excerpts (perhaps Don Juan or Brahms 1), or should I just focus on demonstrating that I can be a solid section player?
Any other unsolicited advice is greatly appreciated.
