Expert Cab Advice

Pretty much any of the Ampeg cabs will work just fine for you - just depends on what kind of sound you like. If you like booming lows, go for the HLF's or 15's - if you want more focus and definition - go for the sealed cabs with 10's. The head will go down to 4 ohms, which is where you want to be to get the most from the amp - so you can run either (1) fridge sized cab or (2) 8 ohm stackable cabs. Whatever trips your trigger. I personally wouldn't mix 10's and 15's because they throw differently, and having all the same will be more consistent for projection. if you are looking for cheap - you can usually score good deals on Ebay or GC's used online list - but you don't have to buy new.

I'm going to read up some more on avatar. Does anyone have a secondary brand they recommend? What about these ashdown MAG cabs?

This'll probably get me flamed by some ...but...IMHO, Avatar's bass cabinets are in line with Ashdown's, Ampeg's, Carvin's, Fender's, Peavey's, ect., ect., ect.
Avatar uses a tried and proven cab design.
Their well built.
They use speakers and horns from the same company that are used in the high-dollar, brand-name cabinets.
They sell below what the brand-name, same quality, cabs go for.
They have excellent customer service.
And, the main thing...they sound pretty good!
...What they lack, also IMHO.......
Factory installed casters.
Fancier metal grills as found on brand-name cabs.
Fancier name plates as found on brand-name cabs.
Some have said the crossovers are weak, (I've not had a problem from mine!)
Fancier lettering around the back input plate as found on the brand-name cabs.
Truth is, I've had many comments on how much improved my sound is now with the vertical stacked Avatars than I did when I was running my high-dollar Eden 212XLT cab!
There are cabs on the market that'll give you a slight boost in lows/smoothness, slight boost in spl's, better cosmetics.
What you have to decide, is it worth two to three times the price over the Avatar for these things.

I do like that avatar 410 in the green tolex. I sent him an email asking him if he does the heavy duty linex in color as well.

There are just so many choices it is enough to make one's head spin!

Enjoyed the sound of the SVT 410hlf

Hated the sound of both paper cone hartkes and aluminum in the 410 (well hated is pretty harsh... they didn't seem for me)

Maybe I should just get a 4ohm 410 avatar and get it in green and call it a day! I do love green.


Oh... I do play some 5 string basses at times and or tune a tad lower than standard probably 20% of the time. How does the avatar sound down low?

How does the 4x10 avatar 4 ohm sound at high volumes?

Oh. and to answer the comment about what part of florida and about used gear: I live in central florida so I'm centrally located. I am so dumb when it comes to amps and cabinets that I want to try to learn as much as I can and pick out the best cabinets and know why I like the cabs that I like.

Also I won't be able to buy this cab for a few months so I'd rather not look at used/classifieds until I have the money to be able to buy something.


I guess now I'm trying to decide 2 2x10s or a 410... the 410 would probably fit in my backseat? Honda Accord 2004 four door. Buying the 2 2x10s is going to be a bit more expensive and I would be able to get the full power out of my amp right away with the 4x10...

I love my avatar 4x10 neo. Sounds as good or better than my swr goliath and weighs 25 lbs less. The cost is low and the customer service is excellent

Carvin makes a couple of 2x10 cabs that get pretty good reviews. I haven't tried any recently - last was prior to the Neo drivers... And I'm not a 10" fan (prefer 12s and 15s).

How does the 4x10 avatar 4 ohm sound at high volumes?

Mine is kinda muddy at times with my Hartke HA4000 amp and MIM Jazz. I've played with the EQ but can't get the buzzy muddy mess out. I'm going with 2x12 cab next time.

I can get 2 4x10 cabs in the back of my 99 Accord 4-door. My Avatar cabinet is a bit slimmer than my Hartke cab, but they both fit easily.
