Explaining G.A.S to those that don't understand...

I am trying to explain G.A.S. to my husband. I just bought a bass in January and got one in a trade. Now I am looking to sell both these basses to buy another one.

He does not understand G.A.S. and I can't seem to explain it in a way he understands. He thinks that one bass is all you need.

Maybe he doesn't need to understand, it but he wants to know why I need more than one bass.

Well honestly one bass is really all you do need to get started and to just play. With guys perhaps explain it with a way we would understand. Basses are like women. You meet one women, like her a lot, love her, she is the one, but you still kinda wanna try all the others :p

My wife understands that I will probably always be trying something new. She gets it. Doesn't like it, but doesn't say anything when a bass comes or goes. She just smiles.

I am trying. I'm much better than I uses to be - probably because I have tried almost everything and am now settling down to what I know I like.

I have a Geddy Lee with HipShot tuners and a custom painted pick guard. It's the best sounding/feeling/playing passive jazz I have tried - and that includes a bunch of "on steroid" versions. I'll be picking up a custom Roscoe Century 6 in a few weeks. Best B string I've heard/played. This will be my "stretch myself" bass.

Between these two, I should be good for a while...I hope.

I once put my GAS into perspective with my GF. Not only do I play bass, I race motorcycles as well. I've been having more fun playing lately so I explain it thusly:

If I don't spend it on equipment, I'll spend it on the race bike. Which do you prefer?

Gear always wins.

I had major gas before I got my 2nd bass an ATK305. It is pretty nifty now all I want are pedals. Which come to think of it is still G.A.S. only in a different form so I guess I'm still a victim.

But as for the bass front the only one that gets my motor goin' is a bass with 5 strings and both a P pickup and a Humbucker which can be tapped to replicate a Jazz pickup. So that is a very short list of G.A.S. candidates.

@ OP: Whatever you do don't say "Variety" just simply tell him I'm trying to find my favorite. If you have a favorite and he knows it and he brings it up just add "Not anymore" and if he tries to get you to sell it counter by saying "I will it's going to you if I die".
