Really, anything else is just an Explorer copy. Plenty of companies make Explorer copies, or "inspired" or whatever yoru favorite euphemism for copy is. It's an old body style that keeps getting "recycled," sort of like "who makes a good Explorer" threads keep getting recycled.


The usual answers include Hamer and Aria Pro. The Aria, like the Gibson, is no longer in production, but you asked "who made" so there you go.

Alembic still makes an amazing one, for amazing money, but much cheaper used if you can find them.

Well, yeah. Just as every P or J bass is a copy of a Fender. I think the fact that Gibson came up with the design doesn't really fit into the equation here.

If you really wanted an Explorer, I'd either have a custom build or get the parts from Warmoth.

That is correct. Actually, Dean offers four Explorer-type models: The Invalid Link Removed, the Invalid Link Removed, the Invalid Link Removed and the Invalid Link Removed.

Hamer used to make an awesome Explorer-shaped bass. I think it was called the Blitz Bass. Very nice.

Ah ... I love my Gibson Explorer. I've had it for decades but the truth is that I almost didn't. I'd just started a new band and was looking for a new bass that would have the sound I was looking for. I'd tried all the other basses in the store passing this one by because I thought I wanted a guitar that looked like a guitar and not a beer label. After sitting with it for just under two minutes, I knew it was coming home with me. Mine's black just like yours.

Of course, I've bought many basses since and this one hasn't seen a stage in years but I still love it and use it for recording quite a bit.

BTW, thanks for posting the pic. I was looking for a good picture of one that I could make into a cakewalk icon.

I have an Epiphone Explorer from 1999. Baseball bat neck, but the pickups are great! Gets real aggressive and has a ton of low end. Pretty lightweight too.
