Fake/Real Book Recommendations?

Someone may have mentioned this, but sorry, I didn't have time to read all the posts.

You can head down to the local university and poke around the music department, if no one can help you out then just stick a piece of paper to a bulletin board saying "Beginner's real book needed, C instruments, Call (insert name and number)"

Works every time.

I agree and have several Sher books - but at Jazz Summerschool, I was in a small group with a Sax player who had a really old illegal book - there were discrepancies and our tutor confimed that they were usually wrong - he didn't need books - he had all these tunes in his head and played them every night!! ;)

Doesn't work in the UK I'm afraid! :(

Univesities' libraries are strictly limited to students only and I have found great difficulty even getting in to them - and very few (if any?) of them have music departments. Music is specialised and is restricted to a few separate colleges. :(

Excuse me?!!! Most universities in the UK don't have music programs??? What's the world coming to...

Well - UK Universities tend to specialise in certain subjects and Music is covered by the Royal College, Guildhall in London and a few others. Many places do music technology - like recording, engineering - but you will have to be very lucky to find a UK University with a Jazz faculty!! :hmm:

I only know of Leeds and the Guildhall offering degrees in Jazz?

The Conservatoire in Birmingham does degress in Jazz, but I don't know of many other places

Warning! Bringing thread back for the dead!

So, Bruce, do you have all 3 volumes of the Sher real books? which would you recommend to buy 1st?

I've found some people to jam some jazz with and am going to start a bit of a group :)

I plan on getting a couple of real books this pay day... probably a Sher volume and the illegal one if chappells will sell it me over the phone ;)

I've only got Vol 1 - I looked at 2 and 3, but they seemed to be more "pop".

For what you are talking about - it can often be better to get things like the Aebersold "playalongs" - as they have Eb and Bb parts - which you can photocopy and give to horn players!! ;)

I've looked at illegal fake books at Jazz Summerschool and they seem to have mistakes - none of the tutors (all very experienced Jazz pros) I've met, think they're worth getting.

I've also got a small A5 size book which has 625 standards in it - very useful as you often don't want to be carting around loads of big, heavy books along with everything else!! ;)

I've found a guitarist and drummer just to start out. i'm familar with guitar so it's a bit easier. he also plays sax, so he might give that go too on some tracks.
once we're up and running (well, er, walking!) i want to get piano in the mix too

I'm very pleased to have found this thread, as I was just about to PM Bruce to ask about fake/real books, as I need to expand my repertoire.

I suspect I'll end up getting the New Real Book: vol.1, although vol.2 looks to have some good stuff in (plenty of Chick Corea and Horace Silver tunes).

Good luck with the jazz band Howard. I wish I could get something similar going. Maybe I'll see you at Jazz Summerschool!

Thanks! It's just a learning experience for me, really. I'm not hoping for much more than that, but you never know, if all goes well, I might take it in front of an audience :)

Re: summer school. As long as I can get a place, I'll be there! The mrs has given me the all clear! :)
