Fake?

I'll tell you EXACTLY what it is.

It is a "Squier Series" made in Mexico Jazz bass. These are identified (1) by the Fender headstock letters not being outlined, but being all black, and (2) by the pickguard that extends over where the control plate would be, and (3) the strat knobs. The Squier Series was written on the headstock end in small letters, away from the Fender logo. Many times you'll find this Squier Series part removed....for obvious reasons.

My drummer has one. I bought it for him for $115 a couple years ago.
 
it's a fender MIM Jazz from the early to mid 90s, since it doesn't have "squier series" on the headstock I'd say its a standard series, given the fact that it's a three layer pickguard it's probably from '95-98 I got a '94 squier series from a pawn shop, the next time I went they had a '96 standard series one - in the same colour, with less dings on it, and a 3 layer pickguard.
