Neal is a beast. He plays such great ideas so clearly and with such a great sound. One of the best!
Nice one Olie. Neal is one of my absolute favourites. Had a lesson with him in NYC and he's a top bloke as well.
Nice vid. Pretty frustrating, though, that he's getting this great sound and the video camera is placed so you can't see his pickup or amp. Now how will I know what gear to buy?

I heard Neal Miner's great sound last fall at Manhattan's Metropolitan room and looked around for signs of a rig without success. Later I met the band and said to Neal "No amp?" to which he said it was a good room so he didn't need one. The club is not tiny so you do the math while working with a quartet behind Annie Ross. The rest of the band was great, too. Love Tardo Hammer on piano.
Well, the mic in the camera is the amp. I bet it sounded way better in the room without the coloration of those electronics.
... get with a drummer with those skills, attitude, and a small kit ..you won't have any problem being heard unamped if you've got any chops at all.

Yeah but what string combo is he using? The strings must be why he's such a great player
Through the good graces of Mr. Foosball, I was fortunate to see Neil play at a clinic in New York last year. Very inspiring to hear him play live.
He's opposed to amps/pickups and doesn't even have a pickup on his bass. He'll use a mic in front of the the bass if necessary but he has such a big sound that most rooms in the city don't require it. It's all in his technique. He played my bass and got what felt like twice the volume out of it that I did.
