Fascinating Rich Brown Solo

I recently came across this video by chance and was very impressed by Rich Brown. Firstly, there is his confident way of accompanying - but look at his solo. What he plays is not revolutionary but very effective... he doesn't try to outdo the rhythmic complexity of Ledbetter's solo but rather approaches it very calmly and almost searchingly - and what a beautiful bass sound he has! The spirituality that he radiates has something almost Coltranesque about it. I then watched some of his YT videos - really very impressive, also as a bass teacher.

Haven't really heard him be for. Very nice solo. Heartfelt, soulful & expressive as opposed to just fast/monster chops for the sake of chops. Thanks for posting

This song is very reminiscent of Flim and the BBs, without Dick Oates. Rich reminds me a little of Jimmy Johnson, too.

They are all incredible musicians, and their playing in this video is extraordinary.

But for some reason the drummer impresses me the most.

Dapp Theory was my introduction to Rich Brown more than 20 years ago. It's interesting to hear his progression both as a player, and in his tone from this much more "burpy/bright" version to his current much smoother/mellow tone on the same bass. Just a monster bassist, then and now!

Interesting. The only guy I've ever heard from this trio is Larnell Lewis. I was definitely getting JJ vibes from the bass player, but I wasn't sure how valid that was because I've only heard him with James Taylor and Allan Holdsworth. I generally dislike bass solos, but there are a few JJ ones I loved and I liked Rich Brown's solo here. I'll have to listen to more of this trio and Flim and the BBs as well.

Rich is my favorite modern bass player. I heard him solo on a track called Coconuts and I almost drove off the road trying to add it to my playlist. I had never heard that level and style of soloing before and that’s because there is nobody like him. He has such a beautiful tone, it’s like an evolved version of John patittucis tone. I believe he rolls off the tone bass and treble knobs and boosts his mids. It is a signature sound that he has created. Suspect he probably uses a plate style verb as well when he solos.

But really his phrasing and licks are just incredible. He also grooves hard. Listen to old dap theory. He’s the complete player and imo at the highest level on the instrument.
