Fatboy

10CC My bass has two outputs. One output ( Neck pickup "lows" ) ran into the Fatboy which saturates the lowend in a nice way. From there I ran it into the Avalon which beefs up the low end and to the board. This signal path is just pure lowend. The second signal path starts from the bridge pickup then goes to the Noble which has a nice round warm tone and from there into the REDDI which adds a bit more teeth to the sound. This signal path is more of a full range sound with some lows trimmmed off. Both signals are balanced at the board and that is what you are hearing. You can knock it all you want but I think it sounds good to my ears. 10 CC I would welcome hearing how your bass sounds. We may have a difference of opinion on what we consider a great bass tone. I will say that all 4 DI boxes sounded different. I cant really pick a winner. It really all depends on what you want. The REDDI i think has the most rock n roll sound. The Noble has a nice EQ built in which allows the bass to get phat if you need that boost. The Avalon has a ton of headroom and is very clean sounding and the Phatboy is kinda like the REDDI but when you crank the gain in saturates nicely.

Are you the guy who made the YouTube video? It's basically impossible for us to figure out how these boxes compare to each other since you used them all at the same time. (As an aside, this is kind of like wearing 4 different colognes at the same time. While the final smell may smell okay, it's kind of excessive and in bad taste, don't you think?)

Thanks! I'm currently playing around with the split outputs on my Attitude bass as well. Hoping to come upon something that sounds half that good.

Do you remember what strings were on it?

I will say this. I can not get that sound by using any one DI alone. And we are not talking scents here we are talking sounds.

Only if you assume that this was meant to be a comparison video at all...
Doesn't sound like that's the case.

"No YouTube video ever goes uncriticized. ;-)"

hahahaha So true :) RichSnyder :) Although I welcome 10CC to post his own example. I am all for learning new recording tricks. Lots of engineers present and past do odd things that work. There are no rules. If it sounds good then do whatever works.

I just went searching for a Fatboy on YouTube and that is what popped up. I didn’t post it out of any negative criticism. Actually I didn’t even listen to it. I was just trying to help out one of the earlier replies.

I like all those D.I’s and I’ve owned a few of those myself. But since you asked, my go to tube DI is hands down BroTon P-15.

I was just initially interested in the Fatboy.

I didn't know about the BroTon P-15 before I found this thread.

I've tried the REDDI years ago, and the Noble DI recently.

I liked them both. I let the REDDI go when I stopped gigging as much.

I sold the Noble because I actually thought it was too complicated. lol.

I should explain that last sentence! All I've ever wanted in a DI was a super colored/fat/tubey/syrupy box that I would plug in and out of. EQ just adds stress. "I wonder how adding bass or treble here would effect the gain?" I struggled with questions like that all the time. I know it's kind of silly, but it is what it is. Choice isn't always empowering. (In fact, it often makes us feel powerless.)

That's why I am interested in the Fatboy. It has a simple UI like the REDDI. (But is it fatter/tubier than the REDDI?)
