Favorite Ken Smith Recordings

I was practicing walking last night when I thought of my old Ken Smith. I then thought of recordings on Ken Smiths and I thought Rachelle Ferrell’s album from which featured Freddie Washington and his Ken Smith on every track except one that featured Anthony Jackson sounding fantastic on his Fodera. If you don’t know this album, check it out because it is a good demo of how good Freddie Washington and his Ken Smith can sound.

I am also curious about great examples of Ken Smith recorded tone.

It is hard to talk Ken Smith and not mention Fred Hammond.

I think AJ was using his Smith on DiMeola's "Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway". His tone definitely cuts, and considering he duplicated Al's lines, is insane. That tune scares me.

Elegant Gypsy album1977. That's the 'Career Girl' jazz bass. I don't think AJ started using the Smith until '81

Stacy Starkweather on the Jazz Mandolin Project, I believe used a Ken Smith Burner 5. He talked in an interview about how the neck was a little flimsy and he could push on it to get a fretless sound. Admittedly not one of the $7,000 basses but this is some mighty fine playing.
