what's that axe mclaughlin's playing? at first i thought it was a klein but the classic PAFs and weird headstock says otherwise.

the more uptempo live laserdisc version turned me on to Eddie Gomez back in '92 (been searching high and low for it ever since). Gadd was monstrous too and eventually i was led to:

unfortunately, i've tried in vain but it seems playing humpty dumpty properly is beyond my skills. i'll jam along on my own but wouldn't dare perform my lame version in front of people.

 

believe me, the laserdisc version was even more mind-blowing. i had cassette & vhs copies and wore them out, made more and wore those out too. an uncle owned this huge jazz library on laserdisc but he moved away and i lost access to that treasure trove (mostly blue note and jazz visions).

i had a xerox of a xerox of a xerox of the realbook page of humpty dumpty. i checked google and i found a copy but don't want to post copyrighted material here. it's the timing of the head - really hard to play it the way it's supposed to sound, even if you have the notes beneath your fingers.

those are both nice takes on cherokee, the mcbride version is more to my taste though.

by now it's obvious i'm a corea-freak so here's another:

i've arranged it for solo bass but i'm not happy with the middle section yet. been working on it since 2004 and will post my version when i'm satisfied.

and here's another classic i taught myself BEFORE hearing jaco's or jonas hellborg's version:

my short solo arrangement is more simple than theirs but it works well enough.

IMO..."Humpty Dumpty" is not a Standard.
That said, check out The Akoustic Band's version Live In Tokyo. Colaiuta on drums for Weckl (difference is OMG good).


Furthermore, if you're a fan of Corea, Gomez, & Gadd (who isn't?)...check out the Three Quartets album w/ Mike Brecker.

 

I have played "All Blues" many times in little pick-up things...if the guitarist goes from G7 to C7...buzzkill.
