Thanks for all the great suggestions! I've been listening through a lot of them: I'm loving Gram Parsons (his solo work and his album with the Byrds), Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Mark O'Connor, The Outlaws and Hank Williams III, and I've barely scratched the surface of the suggestions!
I'd have to agree with you guys about a lot of the new country stuff- it's not worth listening to.
I'd have to say this is my favourite thing about Talkbass, the fact that a couple of days ago I'd only heard a couple of country songs but now I've listened to some awesome albums and have more waiting to be listened to. Thanks guys!

No other genre of music has been as bastardized by top 40 radio than country music. 99% of what is on the radio is total cliche garbage.

If you want to hear some REAL county, Jason Isbell's latest album Southeastern is hard to beat.

The song ELEPHANT from that record literally makes me cry.

Jason is amazing.

Imagine a world without rock n roll. Pretty much what Johnny Cash inherited, and he lit it up, along with some great guys. I love hearing what he added using the country he was accustomed to hearing growing up.

His son found some recordings from the 80s and released 'Out among the stars'

Merle Haggard "Big City" would have to be high on the list.

I never listened to country until I got a call to play it. About 1978.

When I asked what genre, I was told "Classic Country". My skeptical response earned me the answer: "Naw Man, kids don't have any money, but people that listen to this stuff do!"

He was right, and I learned to truly love country music, and to this day, pedal-steel is easily my favorite electric instrument.
