Neck De-gloss?

Has anywone deglossed their neck? My Carvin B4 that I picked up on CL last year has a tung oil finish neck and it is soooo much smoother to play. I didnt realize that the gloss finsih was 'grabby' unitl after I got used to the Carvin, then when I switch back I'm dissapointed. The Aerodyne is such a sweet bass, and with the upgraged pickups in her she can really snarl and roar, or be really woody sounding

Anyway, I'm hoping to attain the slick feel of the tung oil finish neck without refinishing it.

I think the Barts are a little warmer while the EMGs will kick a little harder in the upper mids/top. Of course that's subjective, but whatever. I like my '62 P/ SD STK-J2 combo quite well for everything I do.

Hit the neck with some #0000 steel wool, it'll turn it into a satin finish that is very slick feeling.

Just put some masking tape over your pickups so keep the metal shavings off of them.

You'll be better off using Micro-Mesh. It's what pro luthiers use to get that "amazing" worn but incredibly smooth finish.

Subjective indeed, but the hum cancelling was my primary goal in upgrading pickups and I went with the diMarzios: Split P and Ultra Jazz. I also have much stronger tone as a result.

Also: consider the possibility that your hum might be caused by stray RF as well as single coil p/u noise. if thats the case you may need some sheilding work. I ended up sheilding my control cavity, p/u cavities and wrapping the p/u signal wire in mesh sleeving tied to common ground. She's the quietest fender around now (noise-wise) as long as all the connections are solid.

There is a large thread with lots of detail & photos on this in the repair forum under Jazz Sheilding by Lyle Caldwell. Lots of people have posted onto that thread, but its a sticky, just look at the original work that Lyle did and his excellent photo documentation.

I'm considering purchasing an '07 Aerodyne J. It has 4 controls compared to 3 (which are more common?) I assume 3 is a standard J (V/V/T) set-up. Is 4 V/V/T/T? Anybody who has one have an opinion? I have varied types of control set-ups on different basses so just wondering if there is one better than the other (3 or 4) or if it's just a personal preference. thanks -

Just saw this question/inquiry addressed - sounds like it's been modded w/another pot. hummmm....

You are probably correct about the extra knob/pot, but I doubt the chance of a pre-amp. No mention of it in the sale and this is posted by an internet biz site. I've offered him a lower bid for "?" reasons.

I have always liked the (sorry for the oft repeated cliche') elegance of the Aerodyne design concept. Trim & sexy bound J body in piano black w/a sculpted top - what's not to like? If I get this body, I have a specific subtle re-design in mind. If not.., so be it!

My guess is that they took a standard Aerodyne with the top loading output jack and converted the jack to a 4th knob; installed a strat type output jack.

There are a couple of mfg. that offer preamps that will fit in a jazz bass cavity, tight squeeze IMHO, but the circuitry itself really dosent need that much room. its the business end of the pots and the battery that really need to be accomodated.

I would think that since its a music shop selling it they should recognize that they have a modded instrument and provide more details about the mod and include some shots with the control cavity opened up; unless I missed something.

i don't konw all teh 'official' rules, but most the groups seems to want you to post a pix or two of your gear.

But welcome nonetheless; I gave my stingray and carvin basses the day off and used my Aerodyne for today's church service. I had forgotten how nice and quiet it is with all the custom sheilding & humbucker p'us I upgraded her with. I think I'm going bridge shopping now.
