I own a Fullerton '57 R.I. and have compared it to a recent '58 Custom shop. In my opinion it eats it for breakfast! The '57 just feels better, more hand made... it's really hard to quantify! I would wholeheartedly recommend a fullerton era R.I but I suppose every guitar i different so there are no set guarantees !!!

fender av 62 reissue new or fullerton era

If you are looking to spend over a $1000.00 on any Fender, I would recommend you consider looking at the new basses Fender is making. They have vibe, are fairly lightweight and you can get any finish you want...without anyone else's dents or scratches added...plus a nice case.

Thanks to everyone who suggested these basses. I ordered a 62 from a large online retailer (a blemished one for a good price) and was not happy with it at all. I felt it was a rather poorly built example and did nothing for me in the sound department. The look was pretty good but not my idea of a good vintage bass sound or feel,and some poor quality control. So now I'm in the process of contacting Johnk here on tb to possibly build one for me!! Why didn't I think of this before? Thank you to Spencer and a few other TB'ers who suggested this option for a vintage jazz.

The neck on my 83 RI is a lot different profile wise compared to the recent 62 RI's. My 83 is wide and thin, and has an extremely dark rosewood fingerboard as well. It is an amazing neck.
I have no experience with pre CBS fenders, but I think I remember reading that they were primarily similar in profile?

A new AVRI will be more like the 96 American standard than a real vintage J. I'd suggest looking at a lakland USA. The truss rod adjustor is reason enough to go that direction over a reissue.
