Fender Blacktop Club

I am seriously considering getting rid of my black j and my cwp p bass. Changes in life mean moving out of state. Both basses are brand new and have very little play. To list them here, all I have to do is become a supporting member?

New Blacktop owner here. Purchased a few weeks ago. It had already received the squire jazz neck and sounded great already, but I can't seem to leave well enough alone. So, I swapped out the pickguard, added a '62RI pickup to the neck, Dimarzio 122 in the bridge, swapped to v,t/v,t stacked controls and added covers. The 'snarl' this bass has is boardering the ridiculous! Sounds amazing! CHEERS! Brad

Funk-tastic, slugger!

I find it rather appropriate that someone who put a whole lotta love into their Blacktop should get the coveted NUMBER 69! Welcome aboard!! :woot:

Just picked up a Blacktop Jazz (my first Jazz bass), and am loving it to death. Easy to play, tone for days, and very even across the entire range. I also like that I can raise the strings up a bit to accommodate my DB hands without messing up the tone or intonation too badly. Too bad they discontinued these...I think the design is a winner.

One could say the neck and body are simply an MIM Standard Jazz, once you take away the different pickups and hi-mass bridge, and they wouldn't necessarily be wrong. But that being said, I wonder if they grabbed the "cream of the crop" from the Mexico factory to insure the new line made a strong debut into the market.

Whichever it is, I'm glad you're lovin' your Blacktop, Chris! Welcome to the club and enjoy your brand-new, shiny Number 70!!

And as an admin, I'm sure I don't have to remind you of the "no pics" tradition, now do I? ;)

I definitely agree about cream of the crop. The neck on mine is amazing. Better than the majority of American Standard necks I try. In fact, whenever I go to a music store I have to try out the American Standard models so I can revel in the awesomeness of my blacktop neck. haha...

Of course... how could I forget? Not the greatest picture, but I just snapped one on my phone, so....

Nice! I especially like the staging you did. Give it a sepia-tone treatment and it'd look like something out of a time travel movie, where a descendant and his ancestor pose for a picture together. :snaphappy: :D

Bought mine in 2014 online at a very good price after getting curious and reading about it, have been loving it ever since.

I have a AmStd Jag Bass but love to come back to the Blacktop

Can I have a number ? :)

Not many pics of people using their Blacktops in a live sitch. Very cool! :snaphappy:

Number 71 goes to Benko! Keep on poundin' the Blacktop, my friend!! :woot:

So, Ibought a Rumble 150 head from a guy a few months back, and he had a double P-pup Sadowsky bass he allowed me to test the amp with. It was one of the few high end basses that's ever made me think of getting a high end bass. But mostly, I liked the P-pup in the bridge sound, and how quiet the bass was.

I sold off some stuff over the last few weeks, had some cash, and saw a CL vender listing a BT Jazz at a used shop (former Music-go-Round guys). It reminded me of the Sadowsky, so I decided to take a look. I purposefully played it through a Crate BX 15 (because they have such a flat response), to get a good idea of the sound of the pups unflavored by the amp. Well, I was won over. The BT came home, and becomes my second Fender solid body bass (I had a Fender A/E I recently sold). I'll post a better pic after I get home tomorrow, but here's the sellers pic.

I did spend some time playing it and adjusting it once home, and I have to say, the bridge pup is very sensitive to height adjustments. You can get it quite bright using "nickel" spacing (not how it was when I got it). The longer body (compared to my JP-90), while heavier, sits across my tummy flatter (because the tummy cut is longer too), which makes it even more comfortable playing with a strap standing. The P pup is what I use 90% of the time on my basses with them, so it's no surprise why I like it so.

About the only thing I don't like, is the finish of the plastic on the pickup covers, it's shiney, like a pickguard instead of matte like most Fender Bass pup covers.

*edit* added pics

Last week I walked into my local music store just to look to see if they had any Squier Precision basses to try out to determine if I wanted to get one down the road. I was not planning on buying anything that day but I wound up walking out with a 2011 Fender Blacktop Jazz, she was just too irresistible. My Epiphone Thunderbird is great, but my new Blacktop plays like a dream. I'm thinking about trying some flatwounds on mine. I love the white pearl chrome finish, pictures cannot do it justice, and my phones poor camera doesn't help.

If you decide to pull the trigger on the Flatwounds, go with D'Addario Chromes. You can still slap and pop with Chromes, if that's your thing. Love 'em.
