FENDER CS JOURNEYMAN vs CLOSET CLASSIC

Hi talkbass people,

I have the opportunity of getting a Fender custom shop jazz bass 1966 journeyman relic at a good price here in my city, i like that bass very much and will try it next wednesday.
A few days ago, i was just scrolling the local version of ebay (im from argentina, here its called mercadolibre.com) and saw a Fender custom shop jazz bass 1964 closet classic and fell in love, visually anyway (but its a little more expensive and i would have to sell one of my basses to afford that)
The question is, is it worth selling another instrument to get the closet classic?, have you ever tried them (closet classic or joyrneyman)? Any differences? Suggestions? Advices, Comments?

Hello Mauro. Both models are of the same quality. Yet each instrument is unique, regardless of make or model.

My advice is to play both of those basses, then choose the one you like more.

Also: Verify the authenticity of the one you choose, before you buy it. If the seller does not have the Fender Custom Shop COA (certificate of authenticity) with a description and serial number that matches the bass, then ask that they remove the neck and pickups so you can see the factory stampings (embossed in the wood, not just ink) indicating "Custom Shop", "NOS"', "RELIC", "64", "66", etc.

I had a 97 Relic that was an amazing bass
I believe Fender made some overall improvements by 2016 that would make me prefer a newer bass
BUT....I do not like the sanded neck...binding .no inlays...and lollipop tuners

So which appeals to you more? I would stick with a 2016 if it were me....even though I love the look of the 2000 more

The 2000 might have more value down the road...if the neck is good...but honestly I do not know.

Excellent advice.....if they are authentic, they will be extremely similar if built with the ‘66 having a bound fingerboard being one of the main visual differences and paddle tuners being another....again, if default options are on both, the fingerboard radius, pickup windings and all the other important specs will be the same....if you could somehow checkout the shop traveler on both and really dig in and what you like and don’t like.....

I would personally go for the ‘66....I like the ‘66 transitional look of the binding and dots...I actually thought of buying that model at one time....you can post the question in the FCS Club thread as well...we have members there with tons of info..
