Fender Custom 60's Pickup Install Help

I am switching out my pickups on my MIA Jazz S-1. The diagram that comes with them is clear and I have changed pickups before. Where my confusion comes in, is that there are 2 brass plates with ground wires and foam on them. How and where do I put these in? Do I put the foam side to the pickup and connect the ground to a ground, or do I put the brass plate against the bottom of the pickup? I would think there is a possibility of a short putting the plate against the pickups directly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I recently put those pu's in my Lakland, yes plate at bottom! If you do it in reverse you will hear absolutely nothing ! That is the mistake I did !
The pu's are great, love the tone, couldn't be happier- hope your bass sounds the way you want now with the upgrade
