Fender expertise needed : $1170 Jazz fretless question

local music store has a 2001-02 Fender Standard Jazz fretless in a kind of see through white. New that sat around in the back until
i started asking about a Fretless . They say it is a limited run color of White Blond .and they want 1170 for it .i played it today and its sweet - but is that a good deal on a 2002. also its passive with 3 knobs . i would like to know as much as i can about this as you guys can tell me....Thanks

Come on -you guys know way more about this stuff then i do. i dont want to buy it if a 2009 is know to be a better bass. in late 2001 early 2002 were they using good parts .pup's, bridge's, tuners or is the 2009 stuff the way to go . any info --- when they make a limited color does it matter later , any info would be appreciated

I believe that the Fender Standard series were/are made in Mexico. If so, fretless or not, these basses sold new for around $350 in 2002; even if it is FSR (Factory Special Run), a $1170 asking price for is way out of line. (FWIW, a quick google search reveals that garden-variety 2009 models go for anywhere between $450 and $600.)

I have a 1999 fretted jazz and a 2008 fretless jazz (both american standards). I can see no difference in construction in the two. They both sound and play great. If you want it, go for it. Although I'd try to get the guy to go lower on price. Sure, it may be a limited color, but it's also been sitting around for seven or eight years. I bought my 1999 fretted in 2002 and got a great deal because it had been sitting around for three years (and I have no idea why it was sitting around -- it was in the display case. It's inca silver and gorgeous).

well spoke to the guy at the shop today and he spoke to Fender. It was a special order 2002 ,alder body, maple neck fretless with rosewood fretboard , in white Blonde . so tomorrow i am going to go for it , Thanks to all for you responses

No surprise it was a special order, that's what came to mind when I read the thread. IIRC in 2002 the only fretless basses from Fender were Mexico imports and very high end custom shop Jaco basses. But I would expect if someone custom ordered a bass it could easily be fretless. The price is somewhat high, but fair, and if the shop is locally owned, not a Guitar Center, they probably need the money in this economy. If you can afford it, help out a local business. The bass is one of a kind, that may be a problem come selling time.
