Couple things.... I have paper that goes (incrementally) all the way up to 12000 grit (it feels like a pair of used jeans and is used to polish out nicks in aircraft windshields). I would caution against taking any sandpaper to it unless you're really thought it out. First of all its so minor I'd ignore it. But if you can't.. keep in mind that anywhere you hit it with the paper is gonna leave a spot that's "different" than the rest of the board. Different meaning you've have changed the surface texture. That spot will be bigger than the existing blemish and stick out more so than it does now. Thats where the paper comes in. Working under magnification you continue thru the grits until you get the surface texture to match the rest of the board. For a mega dollar aircraft windshield its worth the effort. For a guitar neck I kinda doubt it.

Unless I'm looking at the wrong bass it's finished in poly not lacquer.
Besides, they wouldn't have put lacquer on a rosewood fretboard.

It's hard to tell from the picture what is going on.

They actually do the sides of the fretboard in the same finish they use on the rest of the neck. The top is left unfinished.

I would let it go. It's so small and after years of playing that bass you think that spot will make a difference with all the mojo that bass will receive.

Now I'm looking forward to the inevitable fight between the 1k grit fans and the 1.5+ people. There should be a pool for how many pages that will run before it's closed.

Call me a barbarian, but I'd go with 1k. I'm afraid I won't live long enough to do anything useful with finer grits. YMMV. Though in this particular case I wouldn't touch it at all. The damage is so trivial that any attempt to "fix" it stands a good chance of making it worse. With sandpaper in particular, keeping the scratches confined to where they should be can be like herding mice.

Seeing as you opened the can of worms...I do repairs and builds and I actually start with 1000 and then go to 1500 then to 2000 to make it blend better. So just a opinion of doing multiple grades if needed.
