Fender Jaguar

I recently got my jag in Old Candy Apple Red in from Japan (they don't make em lefty here in the states). The build quality is excellent, the sound is varied, and it plays very well. It had some mild neck dive, but a wide strap and some dunlop strap locks eliminated that problem without even having to replace the tuners. I replaced the stock bridge with a hipshot, and will be replacing the pups with nordstrands or fralins soon. My biggest complaint is the preamp, which sounds metallic and tinny when turned up. I'll be replacing it with an aguilar obp-2. Here are a couple pics:

The Jaguar has to be the skinny girlfriend of Fender basses, lovely to look at but not very satisfying when you get a hold on it...I love the body shape, nicer than a p or a jazz with a certain 'movement' to it, and I love the block inlays BUT who wants a skinny jazz neck and jazz pickups?...Only my personal taste obviously but I'd have to put a standard p neck on it and change for a p/j pickup configuration...

Has anyone tried this and if so do you have pictures?

I wonder if you could do a straight switch of necks, would be nice if they did a p neck with block inlays....

i'm working on putting a p pickup in mine. i just ordered the new pickguard. i already rewired it with a stacked V/V knob so I can blend the pickups. I'm probably going to replace the neck too (with an allparts neck). I'll post pics soon.

I got my Jaguar last night... I traded my MIM P Bass for it and some cash. I got about 20 minutes with it last night before my kid went to bed, so I am getting ready to jam on it now before I go work... I may call out sick today :D

I have never owned a bass with an on board preamp. A few questions...

1) Does the amp shut off when I disconnect the instrument cable? I am concerned about battery life.
2) I am going to buy two rechargeable batteries and rotate them. Any problems with rechargeables? I am going to add a pack of Duracells to my gig bag as a backup.
3) There is some neck dive. I have pics of guys putting tire weights in a bridge cover (elegant solution!) and I have seen suggestions about Hipshot Ultralites. However, I don't want to mod the bass until after the warrenty expires. Suggestions?
4) The series parallel switch is interesting... suggestions on use?
5) I have a standard SKB Fender case that I bought in Europe. My Jag doesn't fit into it. It looks like I could cut up the inside to make it work. I don't have another P or J bass that would fit in it, so this case is sitting empty. I don't see a reason to spend $100 on a new case. Suggestions

Here is a lousy pic. More later, if you would like them.

dude that is beautiful...that color looks great on the Jag. Please post pics and info or a new thread once you have the pickups and preamp installed.

probably not a good idea, since they do not hold a charge very well, you will always be charging em. Spares are good, but remember it'll play passive, so you are good to go.

I find a wide >4" strap does wonders

4) The series parallel switch is interesting... suggestions on use?

series= more wire, more output, more mids, cuts thru fuzz guitars better, but not as bright

cut away. I did that to get my warmoth t-bird to fit in a cheap epi-bird case

FWIW the Nordstrand 2B preamp pretty much drops right in in place of the stock preamp. You just have to change the mini pots on the preamp control plate to 50k ones. I'm using one with some Fender CS '60s pups in my Jag and it sounds very refined and musical now.

As with anything tone related, it is the players (or the audiences) opinion that matters. The preamp sounds great to me when turned up... not tinny at all. I wonder if different years/models have a different preamp?

Yeah got mine yesterday, shouldn't have written it off as a tarted up jazz, this is it's entirely own animal, still think it could do with a split p placement instead of the jazz pup near the neck for isolation but it's as non-jazz a sound as much as non-p and I love it.
