Fender Jazz Bass serial number

Hi,

I'm about to buy a Fender Jazz Bass, and the seller claims it to be a 1978 model. Need help in dating this bass to assure myself it is a 1978.

S/N S8852110
S8 + 6 digits!??!
Should be S8 + 5...

Nature body, Black pickguard, Maple neck with the square inlays. 3-bolted neck.

Everything looks original, but according to the Fender serial nbr guide, this serial nbr has an extra digit.

I happen to have this telecaster bass neck that I've been holding on too for the last 18 yrs and it too has the S8 + 6 serial number. From your pix this Bass looks authentic to be what he says it is. Hope that helps

I ran it through a serial number decoder and it says it was made at the Fullerton plant (now closed) between 1977 and 1978

To my knowledge, the Fullerton plant had stocks of necks with number starting by S8x.... that were used up to the early eighties...
