Fender Jazz Bass Special - Circa 1984-87

Bought a brand new one back in the day - all black. Very good playing affordable basses. Probably should have kept it.
I have to say, every time I pull my JPS out after playing something else, it's like the clouds part and the sun shines through. I just love the sound of it fitted with some bright and shiny rounds.
I do need a better strap for it though as it does get heavy during a gig.

I had the same bass but it was pastel pink colored but the rest identical and I think that shade was its twin. I think I paid $300 on eBay and maybe got $450 for it. I could see him MAYBE getting $600 but he is freaking high on some killer drugs to reach that figure.

It's not a Jazz Bass Special... but it's a fairly rare Boxer bass with the dual slanted P pickups, available for $499 (plus $110 shipping). Looks to be in very good shape. Someone looking to snag an MIJ Fender from the 80's golden era might want to have a close look at this... (I have one, and the dual P with series-parallel switching kicks ass).

So my 85/86 Jazz bass special P pickup just died. In 86 I had Active EMG's put in it and they have been in there since. I don't have the original P/U so I am trying to decide what P/U to put in. I can't remember what the stock passive one even sounded like. Any suggestions on which way I should go? Stay with active or go back to passive. Like to hear what other may have put in there JBS bases.

They were passive of course, and the larger diameter "hot rod" poles were sort of a precursor to the Quarter Pounder, though they don't sound the same. The QP is hotter and more mid scooped. The DiMarzio DP123 set will give you the closest sound to the original, I think, though a set of EMG Geezers would be pretty awesome in there as well - they're super popular at the moment.
Unless of course you can track down a set of originals, which would be the ideal choice IMO.

Thanks for the reply. Those EMG Geezers do sound temping and on my radar. I wish I could find the originals but couldn't. I bought the bass new and for some reason wanted the active EMG's at the time and have always liked them. Just wish I could hear it with the original passives before I buy something else. Decisiuons
Same guy as above... he's from Poland and has a thing for this era of MIJ Fenders as well. He restores and demos many models, if you look through his videos. The best thing is that he goes through the various pickups/tone options, uses different playing styles (finger, pick, slap) as well as several amp/tone types - so you get a really good idea of what the bass can do.
I had one of these for a few years and did a lot of gigs with it. I had the pearly white finish that I lovingly called my "Toilet Bowl" bass. 
I tired of the finish but still liked the way the bass played, so I painted it in multiple layers of bright colors and then selectively sanded portions to
get kind of a tie dyed effect.
One night, after getting home very late, I left all my gear in the car. I woke up to find the glass smashed out of the rear window and most of my gear
gone.
Luckily, my insurance came through and I was able to replace my gear. Since they paid list price on EVERYTHING, I upgraded to an EBMM Stingray.

these basses came with 2 type of bridges, depending on the year, we guess
there is a 'bigger' bridge -like on mine-, and a 'smaller' one
we had a discussoin about it, just go back some pages in this topic, you can find it easily
