I still don't get why Fender doesn't allow you to order either a J or P bass with whichever neck you prefer. Just seems silly. I guess that's why I'm building my own P bass. And now that I think of it, short scale versions of both, just because.
Almost want to see the poll broke out into additional choices, J with P neck, and P with J neck options as well.

In my mind this question sounds like asking a mechanic "Which wrench do you prefer, an open-end or a ratchet?" They are both tools in the tool box, one might do one job better than the other for that job, and sooner or later you're going to need a torque wrench or something, which allows us to feel GAS--

I voted a different type of Fender. Neither a Jazz nor a P does everything I want it to. I MASSIVELY prefer a J neck, looks, and balance, but prefer P pickup and controls. That's why I built my fretless the way I did (Japanese Jazz Special neck, Warmoth Dinky J body, P pickup), and why I'll build a fretted sister to it soon enough.

Though I don't own either, I've played both a ton at GC. I like the Jazz because of the slim neck and tonal versatility. However, when people say that you can get a P-bass tone on a Jazz bass, they are absolutely wrong. Both are great and iconic, but I PREFER the Jazz.

I have an L2k L2.5k as well as my Jazz. I love them all, but I recently purchased a Markbass little Mark 800 amp and at first I liked the sound better with the L2k but I am learning towards the Jazz now. I think its a little bit warmer sounding and the L's are more of a "modern" tone, although its a little bit more dynamic and power because of the pre-amp.

P-bass shape with contours/tummy ... but J pups ... 70's bridge pup placement ... somewhere between the normal P fat neck and tiny J 7.5 rad neck ... so usually a shallow P 9.5 - 10 ish radius

my J bass bodies and most of my guitar stands just don't get along .. !! usually they just hang around .

i like the definition of the bridge pup, with 30-50% of the neck mixed in to fatten up = i use split coil humbuckers mostly ..

P/J's haven't quite worked for me - tried , wanted it to work ... maybe i'm just old and used to my J pup setups ..?!!

Same for me. Almost exclusively. I love a good J Bass, too.

I love my L-2500 because it can do anything. I've been favoring my Jazz lately because it also does a lot, but it's a little simpler to dial in. And I don't have to remember to unplug it.

My favorite "Fender" bass is a clone. I have a 1977 Aria Pro-II Matsumoku Fender Jazz Lawsuit that is better than any Fender brand bass that I have ever played. My second favorite Fender style basses are the ones that are made by Lakland. Again, IMHO, Laklands basses are better than anything Fender has ever made.
In my fifty plus years of playing bass I have never actually owned a Fender brand bass even though I have probably tried out a few hundred of them in music stores. I am sure that there are some that are just great, I just haven't run across any.

I've been a P-Bass player for 25+ years. I love the warm pillowy sound of a P with flats. I never cared for the tone *I* got from J-Basses -- I felt they got lost in the mix due to a lack of low mids. Last summer I bought a Nash J-63, and I love it. It's very versatile and IMO the neck pickup cops a P-Bass tone better than my Fender J. Still love my P-Basses, though, so I voted P.

I like them both so I can’t vote, and ... needless to say, a PJ is neither a P nor a J and .. yes, using the P-pickup only of a P makes a PJ a P :laugh: .... can’t believe that another thread like this has been created :roflmao:
