PB, mainly because I’m old and too set in my ways. That said, I wouldn’t exactly look down my nose at a JB at the right price.

Fender Jazz or Precision ??

PB, mainly because I’m old and too set in my ways. That said, I wouldn’t exactly look down my nose at a JB at the right price.
The right one would be the one that feels the best in your hands as the Jazz has a slimmer neck than the p.
I'm an elderly student also and I've owned and used both and still play a blonde ash 2014 Japanese Fender Precision, never sell it.
I owned a Mexican built Jazz bass earlier and it sounded super too, and fun to play especially with the narrow neck, like the Ibanez I learned on first.
But for some reason I didn't love the Jazz, bit heavier, more complex. The Precision is simple and standard and maybe the pickup location is better. Mine only weighs about 8lbs.
I thought my MIJ P-bass with the wider fretboard would be hard to adjust to but it wasn't. I'd try to play both and then go with the one that fits best and makes the tones you want, they are so close. And nice.

maybe this won't help since everyone has their own style and their particular tone preferal,...but commonly like this:
1. what kind type of bassist are you ? stand out in mix = choose jazz,...blend perfectly with mix = choose precision
2.more rhytimic or jazzy melodic ? = rhytym choose precision,...jazzy melodic = choose jazz
3. What genre that closer to you ?
punk, funky = jazz,,....
hard rock,...country = precision
4. Bright or warm ?
bright = jazz
warm = precision
and those could be otherwise.,...as i said everyone has their own tone,...
and you should try by your own or listen to youtube,...or even,...consider the bass outside fender like musicman or ibanez

I'm undeniably a jazz bass guy. But in the last 3 years my number 1 has become a P bass with a jazz neck on it. It all depends on what the situation calls for.
Indeed. It is about time a new topic for discussion was breached on TB. These novel lines of inquiry are what keeps TB fresh and topical. Hopefully, this thread will be cataloged for the sake of reference if anyone every asks the question in the future.

Rent a nice PBass and play it for awhile. Then rent a Jazz bass of similar quality and play it for awhile.
The one that feels the best is the one you take home for good. As simple as that.

Yep,Precision bass fits better on most stands due to the shape

So, the body determines whether its a P or a J ? Im hearing interchangeable necks which is why i ask.
Im seeing some precisions with two sets of pick ups and some with one set, am i missing something here….

A PJ bass is a different animal. It is not necessarily the best of both worlds, just a different world, sound wise. Try them all with a local shop or an online shop with a good return policy. Comfort is the main thing, then comes sound. Everyone has their own opinions but you have to make decisions that fits your preferences, IMHO.
So, theres a bunch of versions, jazz and precision, precision with p&j pickups and the choice of necks…..
