i have a victor bailey jazz bass, which is similar to a fender jazz deluxe. The pickups on them are the stock SCN noiseless ones. I was wondering if anyone has any advice with respect to other pick ups. Are there compatible pick ups that that are can create a warmer sound? In addition, any suggestions on pick ups that might be louder or would be just stronger pick ups? thanks for any advice...

fender jazz pups v.s. emg pups v.s. bartolini pups

i have one of these as well,and am trying to figure out the same question.
i did switch to an emg system .....for me,this doesnt seem to be the way to go.
so,i'm tossing around a couple of ideas,putting the original preamp back in and going with barts or fralins........really leaning toward the fralins,but i have a set of barts sitting around....trying out a glockenclang pre (just because i'm curious) with the fralins or just putting in a old school passive electronics with fralins.

I put some EMG's ina Yamaha fretless years ago and thought they sounded to sterile, no warmth. I want to replace the PU's im my Squier VM jazz fretless now to something warmer. There is a video of a guy who put Bart's in his and it sounded good, but not really different from the stock ones. Could have been alot of variables, he said it sounded better?? I will watch this thread closely cuz I need to know!

i recently swapped the original pickups in my 96 fender mim to bartolini 9j1 and they sound great. real quiet. i bought them from brian at bestbassgear. since my bass had the same size in the neck and bridge i did have to pop for more $ to get that special set. brian is great to work with and really helped me out.
one caution is that there is nothing in the instructions indicating that the pickups are designated neck and bridge pickup. one of the pickups does have a "B" on the bottom indicating that it is the bridge one.
note that i did have to widen the tunnels that the wiring goes through and, the bartolinis have the wires on the bottom of the pickup instead of the side. this makes it difficult to level the height of pickup,especially with the foam rubber underneath, but it is workable. of course some people would prefer it unlevel so that is ok too!
now that it is done, i love the bartolinis!
