Fender Modern player Jazz bass - Split the coils?

Hi All,

I just got a 2011 white Fender Modern player with the Humbuckers. It is very well made (much better than a MIM), I do like the sound of the humbuckers, but I would like the option of splitting the coils with a push pull pot to get the traditional Jazz sound when I want it. I looked at the puckups and they only have 1 wire :-(. I am sure if I remove the glued on cover(s) it is actually a normal 4 wire, but its getting to be more trouble that I thought.

Has anyone done this?

Chances are the coils are internally soldered with small jumper wires, similar to how a standard Stingray pickup is internally soldered for Parallel. I have modified a Stingray pickup to be splittable, wasn’t too difficult, just have to be careful (Stingray pickup is not Epoxied) The biggest problem I foresee is removing the coils from the epoxy without damage. I might quicker try and order a pair of Delano or Haeussel double-J pickups that are already splittable…if you can find them - might be a Custom Shop deal…
(I hear that RioGrande hasn’t been delivering lately)

EDIT:
Kind of expensive…

Yea, you are right. I managed to get the cover off (that was epoxied) and all of the internal wires are embedded into the epoxy, so there is no reasonable way to get to them. I would probably end up destroying them in the process. I did not reslize that Delano or Haeussel made double J pickups, thank you for that idea.
