This has occurred to me before, getting one of these, swapping out the neck pup for either a p or a standard j (with a new pickguard to hide routing), then a coil tap on the bridge pickup. Would be a tone machine. What do you guys think?

Replacement pickguards should be available through Fender. I emailed them a few months back, and they told me that they would be available late May 2012.

I totally like that idea, and would go with the P for the neck. Why isn't Fender making such an instrument? We get all these minor, silly variations of the same thing without real, practical hybrids of their Ps and Js.
If Fender thought of it, they'd make fortune. If you think of it, you get one really cool bass.
Could grab a Reggie Hamilton Sig Pickguard for that. In white, with a tort pickguard, <drooool>
I enjoyed the reissue of the Jaguar, now if they'd only offer replacement pickguards for it! I need a tort on my sunburst!
I should be picking up my MP Jazz this Friday! I have had to wait almost 4 months to get one in Sunburst but its almost here!
I've had one for over a month now. Don't let the fact that it's made in China steer you away. I've already played 5 shows with it and recorded 3 songs with it. One thing I do notice is that the neck feels a lot lighter than my MIM neck. I actually like the neck having a little bit of meat to it and less of a plastic feeling. You might like the fact that it's lighter though.
The finish on the fretboard on mine is turning out to be a bit subpar for a Fender. The neck plays well though, so it does what it's supposed to. You can get quite a bit of sustain out of this thing, and the pickups sound good.

Yeah yeah this is an old thread...but At the point of modding the way your talking just get a Jazz Bass Special then !
I just bought my first modern player jazz in Olympic white. Absolutely love it!! I was unsure at first because I was trying to shy away from humbuckers because I wanted that single coil punch and slap tone but as soon as I rolled back the dial and just used the bottom bridge and top neck this thing blew me away!! The thing I want to change is get the smaller jazz bridge so I can put the ashtray cover over bridge and then get either a tortoise shell or a black/silver pearloid pick guard to replace the plain black so scratches or scuffs won't be as noticeable
I can see I am a little late to the party. However I have a 2013 Modern player and I love it! It definitely has a very unique sound. Not quite like a traditional jazz bass tone. Though it has some pretty tasty tones and it's somewhat versatile. The quality is excellent! It feels and looks amazing! Probably one of the nicer looking lower end fender products. I personally love mine and as long as you aren't afraid of having some different tones that don't and won't sound like the traditional jazz bass sound. It's a neat little bass worthy of a spot in anyones bass arsenal
I had an MIC Modern Player Jazz for a while. Well made, though the finish seemed quite thick on the neck, and the pickups seemed a bit lacklustre (to me anyway - I was expecting a Jazz bass sound with extra cajones, it didn't deliver IMO).
I had an MIM Jazz around 12 years ago, and that was seriously good. The only criticism I had of that one, was that the joint between the control plate & the scratchplate was off by about 2mm at the lower edge. Not great QC, but it sounded superb.

I sold my mp jaguar and purchased the mp jazz. I played the jazz bass for about 3 years, i sold it a month ago to purchase a vintage mij mustang bass. I still feel the modern player basses were the best deals to ever come down the line from fender! Im now seeking a shortscale mp jazz bass, i doubt i will ever be able to acquire one, so few were built! The only aspect of the modern players i dont like is that they are very heavy!
I've got a 2013 trans black mp jazz. Great instrument for the price (about $450 US new). I've modded it a bit, and think there's a club here for them.
Resurrecting this one, because I see a short-scale version for sale on ebay--apparently by someone whose main line of merchandise is postcards: Very Rare Jazz Bass Short Scale. Anybody know anything? (It definitely says "jazz" on the headstock, but it looks to me like a P/J)

The shorty Jazz is from the Pawn Shop line. They were only around for a little bit, pretty rare things (although the Pawn Shop Mustang is way cooler if you ask me, if you're in the market for a weirdo short scale Fender).

Totally hijacking this thread, but pretty much anything with wide range humbuckers is tone for days.
I have a Modern Player short scale Jazz. Yep, they say Jazz bass on the headstock, have a sized down Jazz body, and have a P/J pickup configuration. I really like mine... the action really can get very low. I have TI Jazz flats on mine and I'm totally keeping this thing around for when the arthritis gets me someday. It is very comfortable on my shoulder due to the really short reach out to the nut. I think it only has 18 frets. No neck dive. I can play it for hours with no pain.
I bought mine used... I think they originally sold for ~$400 new, but it was a very short run. I don't see them come up for sale very often. At almost $800 plus $60 shipping, though, I would also look at a medium scale Aerodyne or one of the new short scale P/J Mustangs to compare features before jumping on that one. Just my opinion, but I think the P/J Mustangs sound better (crisper)... but nothing beats that modern player shorty for comfort.

It's funny to see this thread resurrected. As I accidentally stumbled upon a mother player just now and GC in Minnesota. Who's here for the prince tribute weekend and just happened to pop over to kill some time.
To be honest I was not familiar with the fender modern player jazz bass. The vintage coloring and dark Rosebud are what caught my attention first. Agree with our previous comments that it does not sound like a traditional jazz bass, but to be honest with you for $350 this thing planes damn nice. Neck feels great and the action was really low. The humbucker style pick ups have a good amount of beef to them and sound great for what they are supposed to do... especially passive. Since already have a few high-end basis, I'm not looking for this to sound like that.
If I can get it down to about $300 and new pair of strings thrown in, it's a done deal.
