Can I join the club?

I’ve had my 2005 (according to the neck joint) CIJ mustang for a few years now. I come from years of working as a professional guitarist and when I went shopping for a bass I realized that of all the bass players I had played with over the years, my top 3 favourite bass sounds cane from short scale basses with flats. Of course they were great players too, but I realized that as a non bass player, there was just something about that sound that connected with me and just felt great in the mix (fwiw, those three Basses were a 60s Gibson EB-0, a 60s Mustang and a 70s musicmaster).

I know mine is just a 2005 CIJ copy, but it still delivers that old school short scale thing that I love. Had a rehearsal with a band tonight and my little mustang just sounded incredible - the whole band noticed and commented how good that bass sounded.

It is quite a gem. Reasonably light weight, incredibly resonant - you can feel every note that you play with it - even unplugged.

Love my MIJ Mustang, and I definitely don’t consider it "just" anything - it’s an awesome little bass, flat out. Glad you’re digging yours

Does anyone have experience with the Squire CV 60's mustangs? How are they in comparison to the MIM Fender P/J mustangs. I really like that the Squiers have the traditional bridge and thru body. Admittedly... Only ever owning Squiers, I would like too say I own an actual fender haha

I'm really considering getting a SS. Having a bit of hand issues at the moment.

I briefly had 2 Mustang P/Js before settling on my P/J LE and it now has a new friend. I picked up a Surf Green Squier CV Mustang on sale at GC. The Squier feels much like my MIJ Mustang but sounds beefier.

I consider the P/J LE to be one of the best sounding basses I've ever played, better than the other P/Js I had. My Squier CV is a close second to the LE for sound and I prefer it to the sound of my MIJ or the 2 earlier P/Js I had.

I've developed much the same affection for my Mustang, though I've modified it pretty heavily from the original. I get a lot of comments on its smaller form factor, mostly favorable, but never a discouraging word about its sound. Consistent presence in the mix, with plenty of beef and punch as needed, but (to my ear) a slightly lighter, sweeter sound than my PBass above the 9th fret to distract (both myself and the audience) from my incompetence when forced to solo.

I got a chance to play a new Player PJ Mustang today...fresh out of the box at my local store. I was really impressed. I currently have a PJ Precision and a Jazz and have been looking for something different (looks, feel, sound, etc.) and this bass nailed it. The aged natural finish looked great, neck and fret work were both top notch. I almost walked out the door with it but told myself to sleep on it. I also tried the Squier Classic Vibe 60s and the Fender American Performer. The Squier was nice and I was impressed by the pickup sound but didn't like the round edge against my thumb. The American Performer was nice but not $1250 nice. I'm sure I'll end up buying it so get a club member number ready...

I measured to be sure and the MIJ pickup is longer and wider than the CV.

Okay, thanks. From pictures, it looked like maybe the MIJ pickup was a little bigger. Your positive review of the Squier pickups had me wondering

It could just be the characteristics of the specific basses but my CV has more low end and sweeter highs than my MIJ.

I actually really like the new Pickups they are using in the MIM basses. I’m not sure what is different in previous versions but they sound really good in my P and in the Jazz. I haven’t tried out the mustang version however. I don’t think they sound vintage but have a clear modern tone that is pleasing.

I happened to put in aguilars, but only because I already had them. The stock pickups, especially the P, were great.

Does it count if it's not your bass but you set it up, bought a set of strings for it, and your frontman says you can use it any time you want?

19 American Performer Mustang. Boy do I love this little bass! Got no use for the rear pickup with flats but it's pretty useful with rounds if you need that scoopy J bass type sound. Only wish it was black, but I look good with sunburst, too

Call Fender as they don’t advertise all available parts. Also, if it is for a new bass and the nut is defective, I’d ask whether they’d send a new one for free. It is cheaper than dealing with a return.

looks like truss rod adjust above the nut?

Yes truss rod is at the nut. Finish and fit are pretty good. Paint job might not be quite as nice as my higher end Fenders but it’s still pretty darned good. Nothing to complain about for the money. The frets are good with no sprout on the edges that I noticed. It sounds great. I wondered what the pickups are but not sure. They aren’t totally noiseless but aren’t noisy by any means either.

Very nice! I have one too and love it - it’s a great bass. I thought it was an interesting design choice they made to black out the Mustang Bass section of the decal, don’t you? I kind of wish it was visible from a distance. Got any mods planned for it?
