I have a Fender Power Jazz Bass Special (mid 80's). I have loved the 70's funk bass sound for years but my 80 bass just doesnt come close. I recently purchased Fenders original PBass pickups

and thought I could change the sound on my 80s bass to sound more like the older more personality sounding fender basses. Well I gutted my bass and installed these pickups without a problem and when I plugged it in it basically sounded like what I had before. No personality of the older basses. Still sounds like the 80s bass i had before. Does any here have any experience with these pickups. Am I wiring them wrong, does most of the growlier personality come from the actually bass and not so much from the pickups? I was thinking since it was still a fender bass, body style is pretty much the same, changing the pickups would really make a difference.
Strange, any help or advice is much appreciated.
