If the '77 is a gem, get it. My '74 P is a great player and light (8.4 lbs.):

I would hope that you're buying the thing to play... Forget resale value and that bunk. Get the one that plays the best for you. I believe that a musician is concerned with the practicality of the tools of their trade, not whether it is a investment to rise and fall like stock options. Does it speak to you exclusively? If it does, buy it...

Just my opinion fwiw... ;)

My 77 is a true gem... I've had lots and lots of boutique basses, but the sound and feel of this one makes it my desert island... and yes, the 70s were a hit or miss period, but by all accounts 77 was one hell of a good year for p basses.

That price is decent for a '77 if its all original. Personally, I'd get the old one if it really feels and sounds that good to you. If anything it will hold its value but likely will appreciate. There is something about 40+ year old wood in these old Fenders that I just don't feel you can recreate in a new bass.

It's almost a tie, but i have to say, the AVRI feels way better IMO and sounds warmer (avri does have a rosewood neck) and I love that ballbat neck, after A and Bing them side by side.

Slight issue is that the AVRI is $1700, and I might as well wait till something good comes along around here, then to spend that cash. But I thank you all good folks of the mighty TB, for your insights and opinions.

They go for $1200 or so used. I got mine in a trade for an Aguilar DB212.

Here is the thing: I've never liked P basses, with the exception of the Tony Franklins and a few old gems from the 60s and 70s. Then I played the 63 AVRI and was sold.

Only found one NT article (from 2014) with quotes from Bob. And he says nothing about preferences. But there's a pic of him at the top playing a Lakland. Stories Behind the Song: Bob Glaub

I also searched "Glaub Fender 63 reissue", and the only thing that comes up that really matches it is this thread.

any vintage fender i can afford is usually a freakin disaster, but while i was playing every P i could get my hands on my favorite was the 63 avri due to the punchiness of it's tone and the neck, kinda reminded me of an sb-2 with its focus and aggressiveness
