Fender (P and J) factory shielding?

I put some Bill Lawrence humbuckers into a Squier fretless Jazz. Sounded great but still hummed. So I did the soldered copper tape with a star ground, and wow--dead quiet even under these dimmable flourescents in my house that are just broadcasting EMI.

Since I had the soldering stuff out, I decided to put some Bill Lawrence P-bass pickups I'd had sitting around for a couple of months into this nice Mexican Fender P that I have. It was always very quiet. Opened it up and it had thick copper paint in the cavities with a grounding lug screwed through the paint and foil on the back of the pickguard.

The P is a 2006 "Diamond Annversary", that allegedly had US electronics, and I got it used this year. Is this a Squier/Fender difference, or did a previous owner do this work? Nice job, in any case! Just wondering.

BTW, the Bill Lawrence J pickups are a night and day difference with the low-line EMGs that were in it when I got it. Not loud, but bigger bottom and clearer at the same time. Really something. The Lawrence P and Fender P pickups are different (less output but maybe more clarity with the Lawrences), but I probably could have lived with the originals. They've only been in a couple of days, but that's my first impression.
