I have that bass in a 5 string version. 2002, and one of the finest basses I own. To me it is the ultimate Fender Jazz bass.

It looks like our top woods may have been adjacent slices off the same log. I agree - I haven't played many J basses that compare to this one tone-wise.
I keep playing my bass and I'm amazed at how good it sounds.
It's punchy as hell even with the alder/rosewood combo. And it's big and fat sounding. There is no reason to touch the electronics on this.
I wonder if the current MIA deluxe series sounds anything like this.

I picked one up this past Saturday. It is far deeper and more rich than any ther jazz have owned. Killer bass, in mint condition, at a crazy low price (under $1000).
I sold this and a few other things to fund my 1969 Fender P Bass. As good as this bass sounded, I could not pass up that instrument. I gig with the P regularly.
