Fender Rascal Bass

I have one. It's pretty cool. I put Labella flats on mine; it is nice and thumpy and has a great muted pick sound. I don't think I will use it live but it will have a place on a few of my band's tracks.
I have one, haven't gotten it out recently. Great fun. Need to replace the stock strings though.
Yeah, it kinda has that sound to it. The 2 pickup positions are parallel, so it isn't as meaty as a Dano. The neck pickup alone with flats oozes that old school tone that Fenders never had.
I wouldn't be surprised, but often the coolest basses were the ones that weren't hits.

I played one in a music store a couple weeks ago, I thought it was pretty cool. The volume knob is a push/pull which changes which pickups work in parallel. Lots of tone variations are possible.
The only slight drawbacks to me were its weight (kinda heavy for a short scale), and that even though its ss it's about the same size as an average 34" scale bass.

They're interesting. I always thought they were intended to play the role of a Bass VI for non-chordal stuff. That's kind of niche beyond niche.
Then again, it could just be that that's what I'd use one for.

I was interested when they came out (there was a thread at the time, maybe 3-4 years ago). However, I ultimately scratched the itch for this kind of instrument with an MIJ Fender Bass VI.
While both of those statements are true - (I am assuming you know your own tastes well enough to say accurately) there is absolutely NO correlation. Are there any models you've ever liked that got discontinued (such as your avatar for instance?) or an models you don't care for that have lasted (no doubt there are, I can't speak to which ones you wouldn't like, since I don't know you)?
Why do people feel the need to put down things that are not to their tastes? I would NEVER buy a bass shaped like a space ship, but I don't go looking for threads to troll with them in them, because my saying "I don't like that" adds exactly ZERO of value to the conversation and actually takes away from the people who are enjoying or learning from discussing the model. If you have a legitimate critique, PLEASE add it, that's useful, but saying you "don't like it" means nothing. If someone asks you directly don't lie, but otherwise keep civil and if you have nothing nice or useful (they are not he same thing) to say, say nothing.

I would not buy anything that was named after/ would remind of of the Beef-a-loes that ride around in those scooters that crash into my ankles while in the super market.

In short Horrible Name.. Bad call on the marketing side of things. Regardless as to it's viability, that was a bad call. Unless this is aimed at kids, which then again tends to exclude others.

Back to the Rascal...
I saw the OG, THE Prototype built by Jason Smith at NAMM those years back. I was blown-away! They had an FCS version for big $$$, then they "downgraded" a version to a catalogue production model for much much much less.
"Dano" (on steroids, built to perfection) was my 1st thought when I saw the lipstick pups, and in person in the FCS glass-booth, it looked kewl as ice- Jason Smith of course can do no wrong.

Yes, it's a pretty bad name.
The funny thing is that when they were deciding what to name it the list of possibilities was narrowed down to Rascal, Scalawag, Scamp or Mischief Maker and I guess they just went with the one that they thought sounded best.
Names just fine; who cares what they call it??
My one (and major) dislike is that it's short-scale. Deal-broken, not interested. Too bad, ultra-cool vibe, and those lipstick pups would be sound great and put out- in a long-scale version!
Where did you hear about those trial names, if I may ask?
