Fender Rascal Player

So, I’m sitting at the Legion and the band is setting up and the bass player is noodling before they’re all ready.

Bass sounds great and has the familiar headstock but the bass is turquoise and has 3 lipstick pups and I’m wondering what in the world it is.

Turns out it is a Fender Rascal Player from 2014. Short scale

Anyone ever play one?

I owned one for a little while. Very cool bass and the upper fret access is great. Loads of different pickup configurations. Overall craftsmanship was good too. I just converted to playing solely short scales and have been thinking about getting another one, but having a custom pickguard made to accommodate two jazz pickups. The lipsticks are nice, but I'd rather have a more standard sound out of it. As a note, the bass is full length. So, it is almost as long as a standard jazz, but with a 30" scale.

I had one and it was cool but didn’t sit well in my band mix at the time. If I still had one I think it would be sporting an audere preamp. Not much it couldn’t do with a little help.

One thing about mine is that it seemed to rattle a lot. The bridge would rattle. If the pickups weren’t just right they would rattle. The bridge and strat style loaded pickguard are unique to that bass. I bet the rattle is common on most Rascal Basses not set up juuuust right.
