Fender Rumble 800 Combo Thread for the NEW 2022 800 Combo

have you tried it ? Can you confirm that it can be done safely in a live setting ?

Combo 800c with 115 rumble 300 watt extension

The Impedance Switch labeling is intended to be very simple and taken literally when it says "Set switch to match ext. speaker impedance". So, yeah, set to 8 ohm for a single 8 ohm cab, and set to 4 ohm for a 4 ohm cab (even though the internal speakers's impedance does make the total load math more technically complicated. But I won't bore you with that here.)

However, I will mention that if the ext. cab(s) don't meet, or surpass, the recommended wattage rating on that label, say for example the 300 watt 8 ohm Rumble 115 cab, then setting the Impedance Switch to 4 ohm can possibly lower the internal voltage (and therefore the wattage) to use a single 115 cab safely!

When I owned the 800c, I called Fender twice and they advised NOT to do that. G Dog had lengthy convos about this earlier in this thread. I think really the only thing that pairs with the 800c is the 210 and 410. Fender advised, again, not to pair with the 115.

I do it with the 800 rumble head. Fender told me as long as I didn't crank the amp it would be fine. I run a 410 and 115 with my 800 head at half way without issue.

Another guy on this forum does it as well. I PM'd him before and he has not blown his either.

I wrote Fender when I first got the 800c and listed all the Cabinets I had and this was the reply:

Hi Randy,
While any 4 or 8 ohm cabinet will work, here's my opinion. Based on power handling alone, and no other factors:

2 Eden D Series D210XLT @ 4-Ohm 350 Watts, are these 350 watts each? If so this would be my second choice.

2 Euphonic Audio WIZZY 10 @ 4 Ohms 250 watts, are these 250 watts each? This would be my 3rd choice.

2 Jim Stinnet Cabinets with single Electro-Voice 15 400 watts @ 8 Ohms, are these 400 watts each? If so this would be my #1 choice.

1 Hartke 210 traveler @ 8 ohm 100 watts, this would be my last choice.

1 TC Electronic BC208 Bass Cab @ 8 ohms 200 watts, this would be my 4th choice.

Regards, Nathan

Bare in mind, Fender told me I could do it, but it was a risk. They also told me not to crank it, but my needs required me to do so, so I took caution. At the end of the day, they urged me not to risk it.

Thanks for all your replies . I tried it this afternoon , at home , No problem , sounds really good . But I am really curious to see if it would work at a gig with full band high volume . Is it worth the risk ?

What fender recommends sounds like when rickenbacker recommends not to remove the pickup guard because it would void the warranty . Fake news in other words.

also, I used 1/4 inch cable to connect the 800 combo with my 115 cab, should I use speakon cable instead or doesn’t make any difference ?

Honestly, ask @G-Dog, he knew more than the first Fenders techs whom I spoke with who later called me back and told me everything he said and suggested was more than accurate.
Also, I wouldn't chalk it up to just "fake news." The ramifications actually sounded quite serious. The guys at my local shop didn't seem to care much, but Fender ended up painting a more existential picture.

With all these talks of extension cabinets and waiting for Fender to come out with the hypothetical neo 210 cabinet. I've decided to possibly get a Markbass MB58R 102. It's a little over 20 pounds and rated @ 400 watts with 4 or 8 ohms variants. They make 3 versions which seem to differ only in the way the tweeter is voiced and some variation in weight. Since the Rumble 800 is so light seems like a good match for easy transport but might look weird together (who cares). I'll probably get the 8 ohm version. Just gotta wait for this guy to finally make up his mind and buy my Edens.

Are you asking about setting the Impedance Switch to 4 ohm for a single 8 ohm cab, ferrante? I have not tried this myself, but discussed it with many other TBers, including a very venerated elder equine amp designer, who all say it's quite plausible. But no one has offered an estimated power reduction amount! So, it remains more theoretical to me. I would certainly try it if I had an R800c.

At first I was all about trying to warn all R800c owners away from the low-wattage R115 cab. Then I found out about the Impedance Switch trick. But I still don't know just how effective that is, or is not!

Danny, did Fender advise you not to set the Impedance Switch to 4 ohm for single 8 ohm cab? I discussed that with at least one TBer who said Fender recommended that he try exactly that!?!

Do you, and this other guy, with the R800HD head set the Impedance Switch to 2 ohm for a single 8 ohm cab, jw? :wideyed:

Randy,

A. Are all those wattage ratings in RMS, or Continuous? If so, then great! But, if there's any Program, or Peak ratings listed, then that means danger!!! Marketers give Program or Peak numbers because they are higher, but it's a very short-time measurement, like miliseconds, and can't be sustained for a whole song, much less a whole set, or gig! Beware.

2. Was there any talk of setting the Impedance Switch to 4 ohm for a single 8 ohm cab to reduce the power and protect the cab?

Bare in mind, Fender told me I could do it, but it was a risk. They also told me not to crank it, but my needs required me to do so, so I took caution. At the end of the day, they urged me not to risk it.

Danny, I agree that anything other than properly rated cabs is a risk. But, people, being people, will take risks, whether knowingly or not. I believe that relying on a low volume setting to protect a low-rated cab can be extremely risky. That's why I'm intrigued with the overly-low Impedance Switch setting to possibly make it less risky (tho not removing all risk). Has anyone had actual experience with this they can share?

Thanks for all your replies . I tried it this afternoon , at home , No problem , sounds really good . But I am really curious to see if it would work at a gig with full band high volume . Is it worth the risk ? ... ... ....

What, exactly, did you try? R800c with R115 at low volume? Yeah, that'll sound great. But, can you hang back at that low volume at a gig with full band high volume? No! The temptation is too great to turn up and stay in the mix to drive the beat, as bass should!!! It is not worth needlessly destroying the R115. Why risk it? Get at least an R210, or better, then feel free to crank it!

Or, did you try setting the Impedance Switch to 4 ohm for the single 8 ohm cab?!? Be aware, at the moment, I believe that might can help reduce the risk, but might not be enough to prevent damage, especially if you crank the Master (which you would have to do because the Impedance Switch reduced the power)!!!

. ... ... ... What fender recommends sounds like when rickenbacker recommends not to remove the pickup guard because it would void the warranty . Fake news in other words. ... ... ...

This is not cosmetics we're discussing here. This is about overpowering your speaker and possibly damaging it! You are certainly free to do whatever you wish, but it is unwise to disregard such cautions.

... ... ... also, I used 1/4 inch cable to connect the 800 combo with my 115 cab, should I use speakon cable instead or doesn’t make any difference ?

1. The type of connection is less important than the type of cable. DO NOT USE AN INSTRUMENT CABLE TO CONNECT AN EXTENSION CAB! Make sure it is a speaker cable that can handle the high voltage. Instrument cables cannot.

B. If you get a speaker cable with Speakon connections, which are more secure, be sure they are genuine Neutrik Speakon connections. If they "look just like speakons" but don't say Neutrik on them, then they may the dangerous copies that don't fit well, or connect well, or last very long. At best they break soon. At worst they misconnect and cause damage.

I hope this helps.

Nope. With the 800 head I use the 8/4 ohm setting. My post was in response to using the 115 cab even though it is underrated watts wise.

Uh, ... hello? Where'd everybody go? I didn't mean to scare anybody off! I was just asking ...

is it just me or the fender rumble series is not that good. it sounds to my ears very plastic....... I got the rumble 800c because it was cheap. I really wanted to go with the mesa subway route, but it's triple the price of the rumble series. I had a PF 500 , paired with the fender 115, that's what I have been using for gigs , but never liked the sound at all. either the PF500 sucks or the rumble 115 sucks. My pf500 on off switch went caput, so i had to buy a replacement as i am not good at fixing eletronics. so i decided to buy the 800c mainly because of the price. i guess you get what you pay for .....any thoughts?

My thoughts? Yes, youre right about the PF 500

Thoughts? It's not a matter of money. You don't seem to like a sound that an awfully lot of people do like. Perhaps listening to an amp before you buy it next time would help.
