Other factors get involved also. I have a P bass and a J that in most places are very quite; the J will let me change the pick ups all I want with no or little noise, depending on the venue. Outdoors, not even any background hiss. However, I had a church I used to play at that I could not use the P bass at al and the pick ups on the J had to both full on or balanced just right to cancel the hum. Apparently some genius, in order to save electricity, installed fluorescent bulb replacements for all the stage lights. Stage went from having a bit of background hiss to obnoxiously noisy.

I have a 2006 Jazz bass with an S1 switch that allows for both PUs to be run in series rather than parallel. Running them in series, although it couples them together so that you have fewer tonal options, does eliminate hum altogether. Additionally, it eliminates one of the volume pots in the circuit, so it behaves (but does not exactly sound) more like a Precision. It does get a bit thumpier.

I can also switch it to parallel so that it behaves as two single coils as Leo intended. It's nice to have the option.

Not very nice, Linnin; you think you know someone. Let the man have is collection and you can keep yours. Single coils are not for everyone. 'bucker 4 LIFE!! :)

Me and Linnin have a thang going on...he gives me a hard time about my basses and I get him in trouble with his doctors.
And his gentle ribbing was nothing like what I got here when I didn't know the difference between an instrument cable and a speaker cable. ;)

I very much appreciate this Thread. I learn so much here and I am so happy with my 500 combo. Thank you to all that contribute here!

feeble attempt at mixing off-topic and on-topic:

I really like the "over-proof" whiskies because the flavors of the whisky and the barrel aging resonate better with the higher alcohol content. A'bundah (which is generally around the 120 proof mark) has such a lovely balance of alcohol heat and intense flavors. And because of the higher alcohol content, the higher price still delivers great value for the money. Perhaps it might be viewed as the Rumble 500 of whisky; I don't really need a whisky or an amp that is so powerful but the subtle nuances and the intensity of the delivery are there in both. Either product can be enjoyed at a low level or instead, cranked up for a stunning experience.

And both products go very well with a fine cigar! ;)

I always acknowledge my screw-ups by raising my hand at the end of a tune and calling "bass-fail" .

Somehow, I conflated BamaSamurai's first post with Linnin's reply to your bass list. It just didn't seem like a good way to retain Rumblers. So anyway, "bass-fail" on me. I'm not blaming the Whiskey or the Whisky either for that matter. :)
